Speak Your Mind!!!

What's up with this blog topic??  Ah, inquiring minds want to know!!

Actually, nothing.  There is no trick or fancy goal alternative motive here - it is what it is.

For this week's blog - YOU - the awesome student of WORLD CIV HONORS is going to get a chance to "Speak Your Mind."  Plain and Simple.

So, what's on your mind? Is it politics, economics, sports, school, the weather, or maybe social issue.  The trick here is to simply "free write" whatever is on your mind.  What issue do you want to talk about? What's important to you at this point in time.

All too often you, as students, are told what to think, what to say, and to be quite frank, how to say it. Well, here's your chance to go completely "off the reservation" and talk about whatever you want to talk about!!!  So, don't waste this opportunity.  SHOUT IT OUT!!

Ok, since this is "technically" an educational blog, moderated by your's truly, I do have to state that there is a simple rule (yes, we always need "rules," right?) - you must be respectful of each others post.  That doesn't equate to a "holding-hands" and "singing around the campfire" moment - but respect.  You can agree to disagree and no one's post is considered "stupid" or "dumb."  Yet, that doesn't not mean you have to agree.  So, when posting comments on each others thoughtful topics, if you disagree, say it, but with respect.

Let the Dialog Begin!!

Blog Question:
Need I say it???  "WHAT'S ON YOUR MIND?"  SPEAK UP - BE HEARD!

  1. This blog topic gives me the opportunity to expand upon a topic that I came upon while researching a previous blog topic. If you would like to read the article I am going to talk about before I expand on it, click here: http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg22129541.500-stem-cell-breakthrough-could-reopen-clone-wars.html#.UyDg0fldWa8
When I think of Stem Cells, I picture in my mind DNA, Gene Splicing/Engineering, and Clones; yes, Clones. In 1996, the first living organism was successfully cloned. It was, however, a sheep... But now, with a breakthrough advancement in technology, scientists have discovered a way to develop a single cell, into an embryo, and gradually develop into a living organism. Seems a little far-fetched? Somewhat yes; techniques that work with animals who are less complex than a homo-sapiens is only but a step into a new field of science that is relatively "new". Let's say that we DID have the ability to successfully clone a human-being. Should we or should we not? Personally, I support cloning. The reason-being, cloning can be a new way to create medicines to regenerate organs or even body parts! Some of these traits have been done with reptiles, but who is to say that we shouldn't also try to replicate what they can do? Also, cloning can be used as a way to help infertile couples. Also it could be used for someone with "bad genes". Imagine there is a couple, but the female has bad hereditary genes. Through gene implants or cloning embryo testing, they could create a cloned baby without defects from a bad "gene". Creating the "Ultimate Being" is far from being accomplished anytime soon. But I feel that gene splicing and cloning are a means to a way we can take a leap in the life of science.

I honestly love this blog topic this week so I would also like to talk about one more thing... Is mitochondria the reason we Age? I found this topic very interesting. Scientists believe that mitochondria have their own type of DNA because they were once a single organism. However, long long ago, our ancestors absorbed them into our bodies, and mitochondria are the "powerhouse of our cells" (I'm sure we've all heard that one in school.). Scientists discovered that Mitochondria has evolved a lot faster than we humans did. When mitochondria make energy for a living organism, they create ROS [reactive oxygen species] that can damage other DNA. The theory is that the more damaged the DNA becomes, mitochondria can only absorb less and less energy. This is what [possibly] leads to aging, and eventually death. (theory.). This hypothesis was tested in Sweden on Mice. They mutated the DNA within mice to age faster. In the end, more and more rapid mutations accord within the mitochondria. At only 25 weeks old, the mice began to show an old age. The mutant mice only lived for approximately less than a year. Is mitochondria really a reason to why we age? I feel more tests should be conducted in order to truly find out the truth behind this mystery. -Tom Hindle

    2. Ok, Frosty.... I have to address your blog... both topics.

First, I'm wiling to go on the record and admit that science isn't my thing (with the exception of looking back in time and viewing how it's pass is effecting our time today & possibly what advances today will have on mankind in the future - but the in-depthness of the subject is beyond me... hint: always know your limitations - somethings your good at and others you are not - for me - love history, but science, not so much)... Ok, I digress.

You mentioned a number of great benefits that you feel could come about due to cloning. Granted, I'm inclined to agree with you that the things that you named would be a "benefit." Yet, I suggest that with those benefits would come MASSIVE abuse. Man has always had the desire to play "God" and I fear that this type of science falls into the category of "Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should." If that "Pandora's box" of "body part harvesting" is opened, it will lead to a whole new frontier of developing the "perfect" human. Those that can offer the "privilege" will benefit, and those that can't - oh well. Not only that, it also could have a direct effect on extending the life span of humankind. Now on the surface, that sounds great - but with the world population quadrupling nearly every 10 years, that only escalates what is bond to become a problem (unless of course some super virus hits and causes a massive wipeout, like the plague... or God forbid, a nuclear war... which, well, lets just say that none of this would matter at that point).

That also directly effects, in a big way, the same thing with your second point. So what if mitochondria causes aging? Do we want to dwell into the realm of stopping aging? Would it be good for the world if we all lived to say 150 + years? Heck, take it down to an average of 110 and you still end up with a serious problem.

Ok, this is only my opinion - but for me, I don't think we should hamper with the natural cycle of humankind - it creates a serious paradox. You know what the old saying is, "It's not nice to mess with Mother Nature!!!"

    3. Tom, you actually brought up great benefits of cloning that I had not thought of. As soon as I saw the word "cloning" I immediately thought of cons. Although you made some excellent points, I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one and agree with Mr. Gehm. I'm sticking to my opinion that I had on the genetic engineering blog. Of course, the pros that you mentioned would be extremely beneficial to mankind. However, this is a major moralistic issue. Should we really be interfering with the natural process of humans? The process of nature? If this were to take place, I'd feel as if we were living in a futuristic and superficial world. We are already becoming much advanced than needed and this would add to that list. Interesting topic and points, by the way.

    4. In reply to Lord Gehm - You brought up a lot of good points! I apologize for being too "one-sided" on this topic. I failed to notice some of the negative effects that would come from these types of scientific advancements.

In reply to Kushali - It is true that morals play a huge role in society. Even if we were able to accomplish successful cloning or delayed death, I think that perhaps our society is not yet ready to see such a huge change. As Mr. Gehm pointed out before, "Would it be good for the world if we all lived to say 150 + years?"; our population would have a major influx and perhaps society would become unmanageable.

      Delete
    5. However I would also like to counter-argue by stating that if society continues to have its "morals", and we DO live 150+ I don't see a population increase that is TOO rapid, because human emotion wouldn't change even in clones. By this I mean, I don't see us having TOO many children, because our morals would still have a psychological impact on our lives.

    6. Both of your topics really interested me since I am always fond of learning about the new advancements to our world. For your first topic, I'm going to have to disagree. You included thought-provoking reasons to support your opinion yet I strongly oppose to the concepts. Genetic engineering, cloning, etc. is basically making humans "manufactured products". I further elaborated upon this point on our prior blog. With the many advancements being taken place around us, this is one that shouldn't be adapted because it has the potential to contain numerous flaws and negative aspects that can lead to further downfall events if occurred. Also, you mentioned how it is a "leap in the life of science" but this "leap" is far too large and contains high risk levels. Regarding your second topic, I found this to be really interesting especially because we have dealt with mitochondria for ages yet come upon finding new discoveries throughout time. It would be pretty cool to live up to be 150+ although it also contains the possible over-growth in population.

  2. I must say I have a million thoughts a day, and worry just about everything. Many people think I am very straightforward, and say what I feel like saying, but for it's really hard to speak my mind. Religion is a huge part of my life, and constantly on mind. I absolutely love my religion, and I try to follow it as well as I can. I just don't understand the amount of hate my religion receives, and this is what I have on my mind a lot. I am so sick and tired of all the racism. Racism absolutely disgust me, and shouldn't even exist. I am Muslim and proud, but sometimes I feel like the world hates me for it. My family and I deal with discrimination all the time, and as strong as we act, it still hurts. We all get hated on everywhere we go by "special" individuals who don't understand that we are just like them. For example, at airports, aren't random searches supposed to be random? My mom has been traveling on airplanes since she was a kid, but because she wears the headscarf like me, she has been selected for searches numerous times. They have done full body searches, checked under her scarf, and so on. My mom is law biding citizen, born and raised in the US and still this happens. Also, many people in my family, including me, have had to deal with a lot of name-calling. We have been called the worst of the worst, some words I can't even mention on here, and although some are used to it, I still feel hurt. It's not just my family, its millions around the world who deal with this. People hate Muslims for what the news portrays of them, and for incidents that had to do with just a few people. Those "Muslim" people behind the tragic incidents are NOT Muslims, nor do I consider them to be. Islam is a religion of peace, does NOT teach to kill, and if you don't believe me, pick up an English version Qur'an and read it for yourself.  Someone who kills, and does such things, doesn't belong to any religion because religions don't teach people to do these disgusting things. Also, the media needs to stop teaching people to label a group. Just because there is a rotten apple in the bunch, doesn’t mean that all of them are like that. My family and I, and all the other Muslims I personally know, are like most of you guys. We watch T.V. too, we play sports too, we hangout with family too. Many don’t realize we are similar to them, the only thing different is our religion, and for absurd reasons, we get hated on for that. The religious freedom of Muslims is low in many places of the world. I honestly don’t understand how people can just label a whole group with disgusting names. How come its just the Muslims that get labeled badly? There are bad people in the world who say they “belong” to a certain religion, but its just the Muslims that are the news almost all the time. We are regular people too, who just want to live a normal life like everyone else. For anyone that reads this post, please don’t fall for those labels and agree with them, Islam is a peaceful religion. Also, I hope none of you ever discriminate against anybody, because it can really hurt them. I usually would never have the guts to say this, and I am glad I got it off my chest.

    1. You are exactly right! Media influence how we think, and I try my best not to be influenced by opinionated broadcasting. Media is the reason many of us are ignorant when it comes to respecting other cultures and religions. Media likes to point out differences vs. similarities, and doesn't glorify the good contributions that a certain religion has brought out. Instead, it focuses on tragedies brought about by terrorist organizations that label their actions on religions that are not even related to [said] event. I'm glad you brought this topic up and I support you fully!

    2. I love how you are so interested with your religion and fully stand up for it. There are 2 types of people in this world, those with good intentions and those with bad intentions. The 9/11 attackers were people with bad intentions. Them being Muslim does not make a difference. It is not the religion of people that defines who they are. I am as baffled as you are, how people can be so cruel and quick to discriminate against people just because of their religion and beliefs. Unfortunately, in reality, these sorts of things happen almost every day. There really is no way to stop it. I know you as a person and never would I ever judge you based on your religious beliefs. I wish people would be able to see that, as well.

    3. Hava, first I want to state that I LOVED your post. You spoke from the heart and even though I'm not going even pretend that I know how it feels to be targeted and hated on as it is apparent that you, your family, and other Muslims in this country have been. I fully agree with you that it's sad that there are so many within this country that do not fully understand the Muslim culture nor its religion - especially in a country that prides itself of being a land of the free (freedom OF religion, being one of the very fundamental freedoms we cherish). I also agree with you that a large part of the confusion about the Muslim culture is due to the negative imagery that has taken place in the media.

    5. To begin, I loved reading your blog especially because it came from personal experience and your heart. What surprised me was that you mentioned how it was hard to speak your mind yet this blog totally opposed that statement in a good way, of course. Being religion is your "forte" you expressed each and every one of your points excellently. The society we live in today is absolutely absurd and cruel. They find ways to judge others based on what they see without getting to know the person, which is one of my pet peeves. They also cannot judge based on one action that the media has portrayed because Islam is a huge religion and as you stated, practice good intentions. I wish to live in a world where these negative aspects were put aside and everyone can be peaceful which is honestly an illusory society based on how it is today. I know you and your family are just like anyone else and people really shouldn't judge based on a hijab or the "rotten apple in the bunch".

    6. Hava I completely agree with you. Many people represent our religion by the people who follow it in the wrong manners. Additionally those people are the minorities and their word is what everyone believes. The majority of our religion is good hearted and very following and don't twist the words of our religion as a use of violence. For example, the Taliban. They use religion as an excuse for war and attack innocent people in "the name of God", when actually our religion talks about peace and unity. People talk before thinking and use the wrong examples to represent our religion. It hurts my heart just as it hurts yours...

    7. I like hoe you brought an emotional feel into this topic as I did too. There are many things wrong with this world, and discrimination is one big problem that really makes no sense to me. I mean how can you fun of someone for something they were born into? You shouldn't even be discriminating in the first place so those are two solid reasons off the bat why discrimination is wrong. Some people may feel we should rid of religion (if possible) or live in one religion but this would not work out and there would be judgment either way. Discrimination is just so wrong in so many ways and goes against good moral. Its painful watching it happen. The stupidity of our society just keeps growing.

    8. Hava, your post was really good. You made your point clearly and how much racism affects your life. Racism is a horrible thing and I still cannot wrap my mind around the fact that people can actually say something rude and cruel to others. Hava, great post and I hope racism will no longer affect your life and others around the world.

    9. Hava, I have told you in this school several times, but I really wanted you to know how much I love your post. Muslims definitely get targeted and hated on throughout the world, and for the wrong reasons. While many terrorists are considered to be Muslims, it was their choice to do what they did, and it has nothing to do with their religion. You fantastically executed how it really hurts you and bothers you how you are like every other person, but not everyone accepts you for who you are. I can’t say that I can relate to you because I really don’t know how it feels to be targeted because of my religion, but I have seen so much on the news and experienced so many situations where Muslims are taken the wrong way. My father gets chosen for random security checks just for having a Muslim name, so I can only imagine what your family goes through. Racism is definitely a huge issue in the world that affects each and every person, and it truly bothers me how people can be so ridiculously careless with their words and actions. I am so glad you brought this up because I know you are constantly disturbed by how people treat you because you are Muslim, and I also know that you take pride in your religion, and so it affects you in so many ways.

  3. The world is at its highest peak in technological advancements. Now, the question is, is this a good thing or a bad thing? There are definitely many pros and cons to this situation, but I am going to focus on the cons. Our generation is just so caught up with technology that we cannot imagine our lives without it. This is certainly the case for me. I have gotten so accustomed to a lifestyle filled with technology and I sometimes do take it for granted. If one day, technology were to be completely taken away from me, I would honestly feel lost. I am on my phone majority of the time and it takes away from other, more important things that I could be doing. I think that technology has done this to us all. Whether it be computers, laptops, TVs, etc… technology has become a vital part of our lives that we have become adapted to. Nowadays, kids as little as 7 year olds walk around with iPhones and the latest technology. Although technology gives us the opportunity to advance and do much more than people were capable of doing in the past, I do believe technology has taken over our lives. For instance, during family parties and get-togethers, my parents and older relatives always comment on how technology has “corrupted” our generation. They’d claim how much they would socialize with their friends and families before the advancements of technology. They would finish their schoolwork without the distraction of social media and be able to do other things like read and hang out with family and friends. Technology takes away the time that we can be using to do homework, study, read, exercise, etc… Cyberbullying is also a negative outcome that derives from technology. Social media plays a large role in society today. It is the way majority of people communicate with one another. This form of communication increases the chances of cyberbullying and it has occurred in the past. People are easily able to attack others virtually through social networks. As a final point, search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Wikianswers have become far too common amongst students completing assignments. If they do not know the answer to a question on an assignment, all they have to do is type in the question into a search engine and just like that, they’d know it. They wouldn’t even have to bother to open up a textbook or refer back to their notes and try to understand the question when they can just Google the answer. All in all, even though technology allows us to be innovative, it introduces many complications as well and makes us inattentive to the simplicity of life.

    1. The simplicity of Life. What is simple? Are we becoming more simple, or perhaps even more complicated? I agree with your points Kushali. Especially when you stated, "If one day, technology were to be completely taken away from me, I would honestly feel lost." I think %99 of high school students would agree with that statement and I am one of them. I remember when i was growing up, we would make plans to hang out by calling each other on house phones and awkwardly asking their parents if they could let us speak to our friend, ha-ha. But now it is too "simple" with simply a text message "k I'm here"; it is just not courteous. My friends no longer ring my doorbell; instead they send me a text message "I'm here come out". It as though technology is making us shy and scared. If technology such as social networking advances even further, I think future generations may be corrupted by lack of physical communication.

    2. Kushali, I agree with you on most of your points. Yes, technology has definitely taken over our lives; distracting us from more important things like schoolwork, socializing, or even exercising. I also tend to get very distracted from my responsibilities with the technologies I possess. Although your points are very accurate and reasonable, there are definitely many upsides to the great advancements in technology. Look at how much medical technology has changed. At this day in age, it has been easier than ever to cure people of various sicknesses, and we are still continuing to advance in this aspect. Plus (although many people take advantage of this), researching certain topics has definitely become much easier. So, to sum it up, I agree with you on most of what you said; I just don't think the advancements in technology are all bad.

      Delete
    3. Kushali, yes, I agree with you. Life with technology has helped us tremendously. Think about how far we have gotten. In the past, the things we do today were crazy and unbelievable. Our medical technology has advanced immensely and the things we can do medically are insane. Great posts!

    4. Great post Kushali. I too agree that technology has taken over our lives. It upsets me to see how obsessive people are over stupid devices. Technology is advancing quicker than lightning, and most people are so indulged in being high-tech, they avoid bigger things. I, personally, enjoy keeping up with what's going on in the world with technology, while others just waste time on social media which have no benefits for them. Also, you said how we use technology to get our homework done faster, and thats the upsetting truth we have to deal with. Technology is creating a more lazy, and self-centered society in the world today, and the changes are visible anywhere you look.

      Delete
    5. Kushali, I couldn’t agree more on the topic that you chose to discuss. Technology plays a significant role in a majority of our lives and without it, I don’t think our society would be able to function as efficiently as it does with it. Nearly every activity in a typical person’s life consists of the use of technology. It definitely distracts us from doing more productive things such physical activity, studies, etc. and we find ourselves complaining about obesity, eye-sight problems, and other diseases, when we do it to ourselves with the overuse of technology itself. I find myself constantly using any form of technology, even when I’m reading, which is on my Kindle. You stated that we would feel “lost” without technology and that is absolutely true, in my opinion. We have evolved to the extent that we depend on technology so much that we are not able to perform certain tasks or become productive without the use of technology at least once a day.

  4. Having the decision of choosing anything to talk about in our blog topic gave me the opportunity to speak about a very controversial and interesting matter, science advancements in the world today. A few weeks back, we had a blog topic about genetic engineering that still has thoughts rumbling around in my head. I strongly oppose of the action and have countless reasons in support to my opinion. Although I organized most of my issues towards the appalling genetic engineering in the prior blog, I have a few additional statements. I recently finished reading a novel about a fictional world where you can alter your physical features by a special surgery at the age of 16. The illusory world was divided among the “pretty” people and the “ugly” people. This reminded me of the genetic engineering we are thinking to adapt since it is basically creating a “fake” child and the world would certainly be different if this change were to occur as well. I would consider genetic engineering to definitely be more of an unnecessary and unruly science. Besides genetic engineering, there are numerous other science advancements in our world today. Telekinesis is one of the many factors of science progressively expanding as a new form of brain wave technology. There have been experiments where “mind over mechanics” played a part such as controlling a motion helicopter with the mind. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LWz4qa2XQA) Following the innovation of the 3D printer, scientists began the development of a tiny battery smaller than a grain of sand and thinner than the width of a strand of hair. After researching the new four-quark particle also known as the Zc(3900), I found out how this particle rises to new explanations and theories of how matter was first created. Scientists have also recently created a bionic eye that works by having a chip implanted into the skull and connected to a digital camera in the glasses. This invention helps the blind have sight which is something you would have never imagined to ensue. The few out of many scientific advancements I listed fascinate me whether I oppose or support them because they follow the trend of being almost unrealistic and correspond with the fact that we have the ability to actually take them on.

    1. Although a well supported post, I must disagree. Firstly, "creating a “fake” child" A genetically modified child is not a fake child. It is still a living breathing organism (although possibly more advanced than us.). Secondly, think of this statement. It comes from a sci-fi animated film "Akira", but it truly got me to question the things around us. The quote comes from Kei : “A human being, you know, achieves a whole lot of things in a lifetime, right? Like discovering things and making things like houses and motorbikes and bridges and towns, rockets. Where does that tremendous knowledge and energy come from? After all humans are descended from monkeys, right? And before that insects and then fish and long before that plankton and one cell amoeba. When you think about it, each life form must have its own energy.“I’m talking about the life force that exists even perhaps in water and atmosphere. Perhaps even in space dust. If they evolved, they must hold some memory locked inside. If it could reach back, even before the beginning of time… Perhaps all things in existence have that memory. But what if the order of things were disturbed?". This quote has you think way back into the very beginning of time. It truly makes us question our existence, but to me it makes me question, "Is this the end of human evolution? Or are we perhaps meant for even greater things?"

    2. Being that science is my favorite subject, I really liked your post. (By the way, including the example about the book that you read recently really helped highlight one of your key points.) The recent scientific advancements that have been introduced to the world are some that I find almost unreal. It's amazing how much humanity has progressed in this aspect. Who would've thought that we'd one day create a bionic eye that would allow the blind to see, or in one specific case, have the technology to allow a deaf person to hear? This is the type of scientific technology we need to focus on, rather than genetic engineering; a process that might not be very beneficial.

  5. I usually ponder about the origins of life and of the universe, i enjoy viewing this highly controversial topic from both a scientific and religious aspect. The origin of life supposedly started with the touching of both anti-matter and matter. This caused a huge explosion with enough destructive power to completely obliterate our galaxy many times over. After this explosion dust particles and heat came together to form solid pieces of matter with large densities. Then the intense gravity causes pieces to come together and form larger pieces which is the scientific explanation of how the universe began and how the galaxy we know today was formed. The religious explanation is that God decided that there should be life and create the heavens and the earth with his supernatural power. Supposedly it took him 7 days to create the world and the universe. I constantly think about which perspective is true….is there really a supreme being out there that has the power to do all of this or was life created thanks to a subatomic explosion of two highly unstable substances that came in contact with one another. This has been a question that has puzzled many people since the begging of time. The simplicity of the question its self causes the answer to be very complex and unimaginable. I wonder if we will ever truly discover the answer to this question.

    1. Religion and science; most seem to feel they clash with each other. How were we created? Well, perhaps if we were to reach the edge of the universe, we would be able to know. Oh wait... is there really an edge? Isn't the universe expanding? But... how can it expand if it's infinite? See my point? Many things are questionable, and for some things we must wait a little longer for the answer.

    2. David this is honestly something that interests me as well. Like you, I sometimes don't know how or why we got here. Religion is based around faith and beliefs, and no one really knows which religion actually provides the answer to how we got here. Then again, many people don't believe the scientific explanation to this...I, myself, would really love to figure out the origins of life and the universe, too.

    3. I definitely feel the same about the concepts you've mentioned in your blog. I tend to overthink many aspects about how this world came about. It boggles my mind thinking where the universe really began and how it came about to the way it is today. Many people have different viewpoints on this depending on their devotion to religion or science. I personally stand in between because I do believe in the theories of god creating the universe but with the researches found, science plays a huge part as well. In addition, I found out that scientists are creating a four quark particle which theorizes to how matter was first created since it is a big question in even today's society.

    4. David this is a very interesting topic.. But I don't believe we will find the answer to this question. All different theories have come to mind but you have to keep in mind they are only theories. We would need substantial evidence which seems like it won't be found soon. Also your question at the end completely depends on the person. Someone who is religious and someone who is not will have completely different opinions. Also, I like how you described the theories "The origin of life supposedly started with the touching of both anti-matter and matter. This caused a huge explosion with enough destructive power to completely obliterate our galaxy many times over. After this explosion dust particles and heat came together to form solid pieces of matter with large densities." This states one of the way people believe the earth has come about and goes into great detail. I agree with you, grew job. Their are all different concepts of how the world has come about and they are very complex.

    5. Tom, i feel the same as you science and religion do seem to clash a lot however they don manage to come together on occasions. Actually according Albert Einstein's theory of super relativity states that the universe is a mobius strip which means the end is the beginning and that it expands in all directions across dimensional planes.

    6. Science and religion both have different interpretations on how our universe was created. I am very curious to always find an answer, but it believe it depends how you interpret science and religion. How were we created? This is the one question that has not been answered in the past or present. The universe has many unanswered questions we wish we all knew, but don't. The creation of life is a question that may never be answered.

    7. David, I like your reference to the Big Bang Theory because religion is sciences greatest enemy (at least in my opinion). Like Abut said, its based on interpretations, and this has been an ongoing topic for decades. Just like in the Enlightenment, the church was constantly being faced with all of these scientific facts that debunked there philosophies that they have been preaching to millions of people. My opinion on the matter is that no matter how far science advances religion will always be side by side.

    8. David, I have to say that topic always brings me great pain. This is because both subjects (Science and Religion) are near and dear to my heart. In fact, I feel that people are usually quite misguided on the "clash" between the two fields. Although religion and science have different accounts of what created the world we live in, I believe that God did in fact create the world, but the way in which we interpret his work is different I seen differently from how it actually occurred.

    9. David, you had an interesting argument. I am going to have to disagree with you because I believe that religion and science NEVER come together, and are enemies. There is this quote by Richard Feynman, an American physicist, and he says “Religion is a culture of faith; science is a culture of doubt.” Many say theres no proof of God, but there is also no concrete evidence of evolution or the Big Bang. Me being more of a religious person definitely influences my opinion on this topic. Discussions about science and religion are tough, especially when you don't fully know both sides. This was an important topic that was brought up.

  6. Around the world, there are many people that wonder if extraterrestrials have ever visited the Earth, as do I. For many years, there have been studies that suggest that they have visited our planet in the past- maybe even over ten thousand years ago. Something like this is clearly very difficult to prove, but does the evidence of their potential visit lie in some of the most famous places around the world? Scientists suggest that magnificent structures such as Carnac or Newgrange can be the key to figuring out if aliens actually have made visits to the planets. Although this may be very hard to believe, look at the facts, first. In many countries all over the world, there are extraordinary structures that were created by the ancient people of the world- so ancient that they were considered primitive. The amazing Carnac, located in France, is a collection of thousands of standing stones- each weighing up to 350 tons. Strangely, they are placed in precise positions to form a large triangle; something meant to be seen from the sky…but who would have been flying at the time, and how were these people able to move such heavy stones into such accurate positions? Another amazing structure is Newgrange, located in Ireland. Now, I can tell you from experience how magnificent Newgrange really is- I’ve even been inside it. This large tomb, built over 5,000 years ago, is a prehistoric monument that is older than both Stonehenge and the Egyptian Pyramids. The way the tomb is set up is just astonishing, because the way the rocks are set up, the sun can only penetrate to the center of the tomb one day a year. That day happens to be the winter solstice. Imagine building that 5,000 years ago. Some of the rocks included in the structure weigh up to (or even over) eight tons, and are scientifically proven to come from over 800 miles away. How did they get there? Also, these stones have strange carvings in them from Neolithic times, and no one knows what they really mean. Even today, building a structure like this would be an exorbitant challenge. How can primitive people from thousands of years ago be able to do things that we, as advanced as we are, can’t do today? It is believed by many that extraterrestrials have assisted these people in the building of these monuments in order to use them for direction, idolization of these “extraterrestrial gods”, or just to show they've been here. What I find to be unfortunate about this whole thing is that no one is completely sure if such an event had ever happened, and we might never be able to prove it either way.

    1. Some say that aliens are the reason that humans have evolved over time, or that humans were placed as test subjects and forgotten (or possibly observed from a distance) from "aliens". I really enjoyed reading your post! It made me broaden my mind. Your personal experience also made it a lot more interesting. It is indeed very extraordinary that human civilizations from 5,000+ years ago were able to build such complex structures in alignment to the stars beyond. Without current technology, how were they able to do this? Were they truly just math-whizzes? Or was there perhaps an extraterrestrial encounter involved?

      Delete
    2. It is certainly amazing how phenomenons like that occur. We live in one planet and there are probably billions of other planets out there with extraterrestrials or some type of life form. If humans ever created those structures it would have been very difficult or seemingly impossible, so they might have gotten help from the extraterrestrial gods. Your theory baffles me in a sense because we might never find out how those structures were created.

  7. So my idea this week is drones. Do you believe drones should be used or not? Although drones save many peoples lives I don't think it is the right thing to do. First of all, drones can easily kill many citizens. For example, when drones are used in pakistan they are targeted at areas were many people live. This can cause many innocent people to die. Secondly drones create more terrorist than they kill. One quote states "People who see their loved ones injured or killed in drone attacks become motivated to join actions against the United States." This quote is completely true when a terrorist sees a loved one die they are ready to get their revenge. They become more motivated and do whatever they can to hurt the one who has done the act. Sending drones to places like Afghanistan kills a small portion of terrorists and feeds the other ones. Third, drones are against the international law. Drone strikes are unpopular in the areas they are used. If the citizens of a country believe that they don't want to or need to use drones then why are we sending them there. We are going against people and trying to get involved in fights that are not meant to be ours. On January 3, 2013 people throw a protest against drones in the country of Pakistan. It included the burning of the American flag and was filled with hatred. People say drones are used to help allies, but if you think about it are we creating allies or just creating more enemies?

    1. Abu i totally agree with you, having drones around can pose a certain aspect of danger to citizens since they can fall out of the sky and kill unexacting civilians. I do however believe that you quote regarding terrorism is quite a bit of a stretch although it could happen. I am very unsure if we should use drones or not........this is quite puzzling.

      Delete
    2. I never thought about how drones actually create more enemies, but you are right. Doing this will do more harm than good, and probably mroe than we can handle. Terrorism seems to be happening more and more often, and just giving people excuses to attack and even become terrorists hurts us drastically. I want our country to be as safe as possible without worries or doubts of security.

    3. The concept of drones boggles me and scares me. I totally agree they should not be used because it is unnecessary and as you said kills innocent civilians. Drones are the outcome of our technological advancements and they should not be used carelessly. It's crazy how something we created is used against us for the purpose to kill. I agree that drones certainly do not create allies, they create enemies.

    4. David I don't agree with what you said at the end, you say " I do however believe that you quote regarding terrorism is quite a bit of a stretch although it could happen". I don't believe this really makes sense, but if I am interpreting right i believe it says that terrorism is worth more than creating drones. To that I would say we will create more terrorists by fighting it the wrong. I stated this in my blog. Additiolnally, you have to recognize the amount of money put in for drones. At the end they are worthless and end up killing civilians!! What good comes from this?!

      Delete
    5. Drones are something that I haven't really been interested in but after reading the blog I can tell it is no joke. Sometimes I wonder why would anyone create something that causes such destruction and claim to create peace with it. This is a true example of science gone wrong and how it has impacted many lives.

      Delete
    6. Abu, my concern regarding your topic is confidentiality. If drones become even more "normal than they are now, what will become of our personal privacy. Though the following scenario is an unlikely one, what if our lives were to become like that of a dystopia where no secrets were allowed!

    7. You brought up an interesting point. I was surprised when you said that you agreed with that quote. Also, I am against drones, and all weapons or anything that can kill, because I find war and killing absolutely disgusting. It's sad that we need to use these drones to try and save lives, when in the end more lives are lost. When it comes to discussing this, we may think of solutions, but reality is that all these weapons exist and it'd be hard to stop people from using them, and thats the ugly truth.

  8. While there are millions of topics to debate on and my mind is constantly filled with millions of thoughts on school work and personal issues, I’d rather talk about an issue that many people may disagree with me on. The topic I want to discuss is abortion. While there are millions of people against this issue, I actually see no real harm. Many people do say that it’s a crime to murder a fetus, or it’s unethical, or simply wrong. I have to say I disagree because you really are removing something that has not even developed completely, and has no ability to sense much around it. There is no proof that a fetus can feel pain at all, at least right now. In addition, it ultimately is the decision of the mother. This branches off into a variety of different topics within itself. This is mostly because a mother may not be particularly ready to raise a child, does not have enough to support herself as well as the child, or just does not want a child. Statistics show that roughly one out of ten women will get an abortion before the age of twenty. This shows that so many young women get pregnant before the age of twenty, which is the tender age in which one may be in the middle of college, maybe even high school, where they are still figuring themselves and their lives out. If, all of a sudden, they are left with the burden of a helpless child, they will most likely not be able to raise the child, with barely any money. Abortion allows women to continue with their future career and have a child when they are ready. Many women, who get pregnant at an early age, usually don’t have time to raise their children, and the children often turn out neglected, and have not been nurtured properly. The pain of a child who spends years growing up with a horrible childhood as a result of the struggle and hardships a typical young woman would have to go through to provide for him/her, in my opinion, is much greater than the pain of removing a fetus from a mother if it means they can focus on a better future and family. If abortion doesn’t hurt the fetus, and is specifically the choice of the mother, than why are so many people against it? My family and I often discuss this topic, and we are truly baffled by how people would be against it. The concept may be thought of as harsh, but I think it benefits the mother and does not allow a child to grow up in the wrong atmosphere.

    1. I believe that abortion is a very delicate and controversial topic as a result the matter of should be allowed has eluded us for decades. more religious folk agree that it is a sin to kill innocent life, I believe that the choice depends on the parents, the reason for this way of thinking is because if they are not going to love and care for the child that would cause greater pain and that is not fair to him/her. I do keep an open mind about this topic though.

    2. Anshul, so glad you brought this up! I definitely agree with you no doubt. Majority of people are against abortion because of moralistic issues and usually I am all for moral rights and issues. However, I think abortion is acceptable to a certain extent. Im not saying its completely the right thing to do, BUT depending on the circumstances, it is. I absolutely hate when people say it's wrong to do no matter what. I like how you mentioned that most women get an abortion before the age of twenty. Now, this shows that these women were too young and were in no way capable of taking care of a child. Raising a child when you are a teen or in your early twenties is a ginormous step and burden. It requires effort and preparation and expecting to know what it takes to be a mother. Why give birth to a child that you are not ready to commit to? That is just absurd. It could potentially lead to a bad life for the child and leave the child feeling neglected. It also adds a great deal of pressure to the mother, especially if the father is no longer around. Therefore, all in all, depending on the circumstances and conditions of the parents (mainly the mother), abortion is acceptable.

    3. Anshul, I agree and disagree with you. Yes, it's a mother's decision. But you said that the child could possibly grow up in a horrible childhood. Actually, they may or may not. The mother could bring the child into the world and hand them to a family who could provide and care for them properly. I actually know a little girl who was adopted by a family friend. Her biological mother was young and could simply not care for her properly, so her child went to a loving home.
Now maybe the mother is in high school and could not handle the burden for nine months. Then it may be needed. However, I think it's fully up to the mother and it depends on the situation. Great post Anshul

    4. I completely agree with you on this!!! Everytime when I think about the children in the orphanage, I become so irritated toward their parents. Why they bring them to this suffering world?? To deliberate ending of a pregnancy needs so much moral and physical sufferings for a mother. But this choice is always make for good reasons. Even if the fetus can feel the pain, but i guess they will be also grateful to their mother for this decision, because this pain is much more less than the pain they will suffer if they are brought in the world.

  10. I am really intrigued by the study and knowledge of the natural world, SCIENCE! Ever since I was young science has been my favorite subject because there is so much to learn about our universe. Science always sparks my curiosity and leads me to ask questions. It's amazing how some people use their curiosity to pursue a career in which they answer questions on why or how something happens. Science is ever-growing and we still have many questions to solve about our lives and natural world. In Biology I am always amazed about how much we know about life and our environment, but I am also curious for discoveries to be made. Scientific advancements is what shape our world and society. From genetically modifying food for our benefit to reaching space, science is all around us! In the span of our lives many more advancements will continue to follow.Science is like a universal language that we speak. It brings people together to answer questions about the universe and discover advancements for the years to come.

    1. I am the same way ox. Not only is it absolutely mind-blowing how the natural world works in so many ways, but the way humans work is just as interesting if not more. Think about how complex our brains are. How does a big ball of gooey, spongey, glob control everything in our body?? How is it possible for us to retain so much information in so little time and understand it?! Sure scientists will give a complex answer or say its too broad of a question, but I feel questions like these cannot be answered and "it's just the way life works." The topic of science attracts me, yet boggles me.

    2. I too am intrigued by science and how it works, but there are a lot of bad aspects to consider when talking about it. Just like the blog we had a while back, Science is a double edged sword and it will always be like that. Of course the amount of curiosity humans have and the many advancements we've made are hard to overlook but as a whole science isn't as great as it seems.

    3. I definitely agree Akshay. Science will ultimately determine the fate of our nation and perhaps the world as nearly ever very aspect of life is in someway correlated to Science. It has taken us to where we are now and will continue to impact our understanding and interpretation of the world around us.

    4. What's there to say, this is exactly how i feel. Although I find molecular biology boring, i find it amazing how we know so much about things we can't even see with an electron microscope. Science is our past, present, and future. Science is the world and the world is science. Everything in the world deals with science which does make it very important in a human's life. Science is the unknown and what we know already, science=life.

  11. Your heart is pounding just from the thought of it. Tests are the path to depression. Not only depression, but leading to less productive, more stressful, sad, and tired lives. Ever since I came into high school my life has changed and for the reason of the topic of tests in school. Not bullying, not fitting in, not even too much raw homework not including tests, but the thought of tests has certainly hurt me physically and mentally. Why can't any adult with a good say see that tests are ruining many students' lives in so many ways? Everyone sees me as a happy old guy on the outside (I know its annoying to hear this), but on the inside I am overly stressed packed with anxiety. For the past year or so my anxiety has reached levels you wouldn't even think of. Many of you may know what ocds are, but mine are BAD. I can ramble about these behaviors but it is too much. To givean example, I will quote a book I recently started reading, "Naked". "When the teacher asked if she might visit with my mother, i touched my nose eight times to the surface of my desk. [...] Depressing as it was, arriving at the front stoop of the house meant that I had completed the first leg of that bitter-tasting journey to my bedroom." These behaviors, I must say, have gotten better, but think about walking into your bedroom and jumping into your bed, and saying "that doesn't feel right...if I don't get out of bed and jump back in with the other foot ill do bad on my test tomorrow (or die, etc.)". Then having to Do it with both feet at the same time. Then restarting but beginning the sequence of jumping with both feet (so in the opposite order) and then facing different ways, then landing in the bed right, it just has to feel right to Me, and that seems to take forever. My brain is messed up, but I'm always thankful for my health, this is just a small problem. I feel like what has done this to me Is my competitiveness and strive to be successful, healthy, happy, and with "luck" on my side. I don't know why it caused such a problem, but just ask any of my friends, I am a really weird guy and it is impossible to even remotely understand my thought process. I can know and study and practice every little detail, then when the test comes, bang, everything disappears, I get hectic, and feel like I can almost pass out. I can't think straight and my mind easily runs to other things. I just can't concentrate. The state is ruining the education system and ensuring the teachers' main jobs are to make sure we as students pass state tests and do well on other tests as well. The teachers also want to keep their jobs, so they can't let their students fail and they Put pressure on their students and give many tests. There must be a different form of assessment where it doesn't cause this much pain to the students. I will come up with it don't you worry guys. I am actually planning on seeing a therapist very soon and even begin doing yoga. Tests: NO ONE (not even teachers) likes them.

    1. Robert, I like how you actually spoke about a topic that is constantly on most students’ minds. School work and mostly tests lead to immense amounts of stress on young students. Now, you focused on mainly tests and how a majority of students dislike the idea of going through the pain of studying or taking an assessment of any sort. I admit, tests definitely get the best of me, and they break me down into heaps of stress and I receive great pressure from my parents and teachers. While in most cases I would disagree and say that tests are important to mark the advancement of an individual, I have to say that they have a lot of negatives. While taking a test, I can definitely say I break into a sweat and this causes lack of focus and confidence. A student can show excellent skills and knowledge during class time, and then completely blow the test because his/her’s test taking skills may be weak or they may generally be horrible test-takers. Assessing students through different levels may not be the best way to reach a student’s potential, and I definitely agree with you on that.

If you think of people's life as a week (Suppose each person can live 80 years so each day in the week is 11 years)..The day you graduated from college, however, is only at the beginning of your Tuesday. School life is supposed to one of the most memorable period during one's life time, because this is the time we grow, we get frustrated, we have dreams and we can make ourselves laugh out loud with no reasons at all. To say the least, the purpose of us struggling so hard is somehow to make ourselves happy in the end. Life is a game, take it easy it just enjoy it.

    3. i do agree, but, as a friend helping another friend, you need to relax and take a deep breath when a test rolls around. The reason you are so stressed is that you are over thinking things, a test is just no more than a thing to see how much you know about a certain subject. You're a fifteen year old kid, you're not taking the MCATs tomorrow so don't worry, one bad test grade isn't going to ruin your chance at becoming a successful doctor, but only make you have a better chance...The path to victory is not a straight line, rather a bunch side roads that put you onto detours that have road blocks on them. So i close by saying this, relax young grasshopper you'll be fine out there. Hopefully this helped you in some kind of way.

  12. School in today's society is strenuous and difficult. This may clash with what we said about one of our past blogs about education (students don't have motivation to do work etc.). But knowing myself and my fellow classmates, I know we want to achieve. We want to graduate from high school and go onto bigger and better things. We all want to make it into a great college. In order to do that, we must push ourselves to our fullest potential.
Some students don't care, and some do. Like I said, my classmates and I yearn to achieve and become successful. With that comes with a lot of stress and headaches. Students, as Rob said, have a lot of pressure.
Our education system needs to take a step back and evaluate the situation. Students need a break from school and tests, and everything school related in general.

    1. Kate, I agree that school in our society is very complex and difficult for most people in the United States and around the world. Everyone wants to succeed in life and school whether you like it or not is necessary for us to become successful. Think about it we are the most complex beings on this earth, which means every single person has an unlocked potential to learn and grow and school unlocks it. A little stress is good for everyone, its a scientific fact. Overall, i do agree that we have to overlook the education in America.

    2. Kaitlyn… Although I as a student am also stressed i believe we need to step up. The evidence shows we are falling behind and many countries are getting ahead of us. As being the land of opportunity we shouldn't be down in the education system. We should be at the top drawing in more students. I am not saying that school systems need to be harder and I don't believe they can be made easier. For the reason students learn at a different base we have created all different classes. If you feel you are struggling you can always change classes. The American school system doesnt need to take a step behind but instead forward.

  13. There are so many topics to choose from as there is so much controversy in our present society. For me honestly there was one thing that popped into my mind when I saw the title of the blog, Illegal Immigration. This is a very serious and heated topic that is constantly being talked about here in the USA so I will address my opinion on the subject. Illegal immigration what first comes to mind when you here this? It will often be stereotypes or by its connotation it could mean random bad people in our country. Well I want to make a stand for these supposed "illegal" people who come to America trying for a better life. Unless you are of Native American descent, everyone is an immigrant, in fact immigrants built up this country. People from all around the world coming to America must have a reason to come here, after all the United States sends the message that it encourages immigration. If this is the case then why does it take 10-15 years to get citizenship here? Not only that, these immigrants live in fear of getting deported back to their home country, which is the place they tried to escape in the first place. I am dumbfounded by the concept of inviting people in to our country and then putting them on the bottom rung of the ladder and calling them illegal. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, or CBO, found that the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act, as passed by the Senate—will reduce the budget deficit by $158 billion in the first decade after the bill’s passage and by an additional $685 billion in the second decade. If undocumented immigrants acquire legal immigration status in 2013, the economy will add an average of 121,000 new jobs per year. Speaking of which, the jobs illegal immigrants have some of the lowest paying jobs. In fear that the government will deport them once they get a real job they have to get jobs as waiters and fast food workers something that the government won’t check. People say “oh they are lucky they don’t have to pay taxes” sure they don’t have to pay taxes but that’s because no one is allowed to have a good job. I bet you that most immigrants would want to be taxed for the opportunity just to have a better job than what they have now. The final point that I want to make is why the immigrants come here to America and leaving their home country. They come seeking a better life to chase the American dream but yet we are really denying them that. If a man or woman want to come here for a better education they can’t. Even the children of illegal immigrants will not be able be able to apply for federal loans to get into college. If they want to come here and have a happy family they can’t. I can go on and on about why we should get rid of Immigration, why we should reform it, but that's not the point. The citizens of the USA can decide what they think right for their country but for me, I already know what my opinion is. My name is Elijah Dominick Soba, I am of Italian/Dominican/Ecuadorian descent and I am proud to say that I support the 11 million people fighting for citizenship in this country.

  14. I have to say that out of the vastly interesting fields available to discuss in the modern age, I always come back to a topic that I've been fascinated with since I was quite small. That is, the subject of ethics and morality in general. Now I realize that this might seem boring, but in fact, it really is quite interesting. This is because a long time ago, I realized that morals were akin to a set of laws that had no foreseeable consequences if broken. A fascinating concept, considering that citizens follow probate simply to avoid consequence. This makes the act of staying true to moral (aka doing the right thing) a scenario in which one follows law simply because he/she believes it is right. Although the world has several righteous people in it, most would succumb to the pressure of a world without rules. In simple terms, I find ethics interesting because they allow the purist of heart to exemplify their true spirit.

It is from the most genuine genuine spirit of mind.. yea, like you said, ethic allow the purist of heart to exemplify their true spirit.

  15. I just finished reading Lao She's famous drama play "Tea House", which is about Yitai tea house's prosperous to downfallen during the three toughest times in modern Chinese history. Lao She, the master of Chinese language, his vivid use of the Beijing dialect makes a feeling of cordial arise spontaneously from every Chinese's heart. Without any euphuism, his plain words just straightly go through the reader's deepest heart. "Director, may I make a suggestion?" "Okay!" "It is a pity about the poor old manager here. If we give him a doorman's uniform , he can take care of the honored guests getting in and out of cars. He's been here for ages. Everyone knows him. He's like a tradesmark!" "Okay! Summon him!" "Yes sir.......May I report, sir, he's hanged himself! He's dead!!!!" "Okay! Okay!" The ending of the play makes millions of readers lost in the deep thoughts, but I just laughed out so loud for over 1 minute. Oh, justice and sympathy, where have you gone in my mind? These days the only thing that can fascinates me is the spirit realm of Zhang Ailing's aloofness,"I just sit there and complaining about the icecream in the snack shop while hundreds of people walking by the window, half-death and their stomach was rumbling with hunger." Mind-numbing people are all over the world, everyone is just trying to be cool in their own way. Sometimes I think a nun is spiritually the same kind of people as a sex addict, they give the world up, but meanwhile still keeping their hope of finding the virtue of human nature. Living is a voyage, but a lot of people can't even find their destination until the end of the journey. Poor people get frustrated in the queer game of money and vanity..But most of us, are just struggling for living. The cherubic kids who was chasing each other in the wheat field is running away from us. We born with nothing and died with nothing. Yea, we are born to death.

  16. Today was probably the most thrilling (not in a good way) and it made me ponder about the world we live in today. 40 years ago it was okay for kids to play practical jokes on random people such as ding-dong-ditch, but now it can be a very controversial thing. With so much news about terrorism or robberies or even shootings people are to afraid to let themselves laugh at a group of kids who play jokes on them. The world we live in today is very different from what it used to be and to me, its not pleasing.
Another thing i have on my mind are the prices of goods in America, specifically clothing and shoes. Today we live in aw world where you can't go to the mall without spending at least 100 dollars on whatever it may be, shoes or clothes. An example i have for an over priced item are nike sneakers. A specific pair of nikes called Roshe Runs go for about $70 at retail, which isn't too bad, but still, when a shoe costs only $2 to make, I think it should be marketed at a little less that $70. It is outrageous, but why won't Nike stop this crazy trend???? Because people are willing to the price for these "one of a kind" shoes. Now there is a thing called the "sneaker game" where people buy shoes at retail pricing and resell them for upwards of $400 more then they paid for. its robbery, but hey, if you are gonna buy a $500 pair of shoes, you might as well enjoy them.
My mind is full of ideas, but those are just what popped into my head at a given moment.
