Good Science...bad science???

Oddly enough, we’re going to continue on our “science” type theme this week, but with a slight (or major) twist.  I didn’t actually plan it this way, originally, but heard this great discussion on how “beneficial” science really is…or isn’t…
Science, for the most part, is the accumulation of knowledge in a systematic method to create general truths on the operation of the universe, most commonly referring to “the physical world and its phenomena, the nature, constitution, and forces of matter, the qualities and functions of living tissues.” (Webster’s) For this blog it can be understood to be the development and utilization of new technology and the expansion of human knowledge in the modern era, though it should be noted that not all technological advances are from rigorous scientific analysis (such as the industrial revolution) and science has only significantly influenced technology in the last two centuries. What it means to be human is itself another debate, but here it can be understood to be both the collective entity of the human race and the defining features of humans which make them distinguishable from other beings (you know, what separates you from your dog or cat or other life forms).
Advancements in science have occurred for thousands of years as far back as the Ancient Greeks (who many believe invented scientific principles), and their effects are becoming ever more pronounced. Production has shifted to mechanized factories and even killing in warfare is being replaced in parts with unmanned drones. The boundaries of medicine are being expanded with possibilities of cloning and stem cell research. Science has allowed acts that would otherwise be impossible for humans to consider undertaking. It has created previously unknown abilities to heal the sick or destroy all of humanity with Weapons of Mass Destruction.

Blog Topic: The question is whether or not being able to undertake those acts is a benefit, and whether science does more to improve lives or harm them.

  1. I feel as though science does more to improve our lives than it does harm. Science and technology are constantly improving, and mostly for the most beneficial reasons. Today, millions of people around the world are applying science and using technology every single day. There are numerous advantages of science. In school, teachers use smart boards and iPads, which have been proven to be very useful and convenient. Online classes and sessions are also advances in science that are beneficial to many students. As mentioned in the blog post, science has played an enormous part in the medical field, from blood pressure machines, prosthetic arms and legs, and radiation machines used for cancer helping millions of people. One of the best advantages of technology is the efficiency of communication. This allows us to become closer to one another by being able to communicate from anywhere in the world. Science and technology have greatly affected the economy and stock market as well. Furthermore, science has helped us gain more knowledge and made it more convenient for us to access faster. Basically, the world runs on science and technology. Yes, there is the inconvenience and danger of weapons of mass destruction being created which could harm many people, but there are definitely more benefits of science and it really depends on how we choose to use these acts and advances that has the greatest impact on the world.

    1. I agree with you that science is more beneficial in society than harmful. Science allows us to communicate with others better and more easily. Also, as I said in my comment science has perfected our diet over the centuries using science, something our ancestors couldn't do. Not just that, as you said science has also benefited the medical industry. I agree with you science is definitely more beneficial than harmful.

    2. You brought about the point that science is actually being used moreso for beneficial reasons, which i agree with. You also brought up how it is used in school which is very true. The world truly does run on science and technology and can help with emergencies, (like calling the cops from your cell phone) like Mr. Gehm has stated before, "What would you do without your cell phones?" I don't know where I'd be without mine.

    3. I do agree with you on how science tiffin advancements do have more positive than negative effects on society , but here is one statement that I think could be edited. You said that teachers use iPads and smart boards and such, but not all do. Some schools have them because they have the money for them, and are fortunate enough to have them like our school district. There are some districts OUt ere who don't even have enough money for text books, they are great technologies but you should have addressed that not all teachers have the opportunity to use them.

    4. Anshul, I agree with your statement on how science has done more to improve our lives rather than harm them. Of course, science has certainly benefited us medically. However, I didn't think of how science has improved our methods of communication- which is actually very true. I thought that you had some great points in your blog statement, good job.

    5. I agree with you on your argument that science does more to improve lives than to harm them. As you have stated science has improved communication and enhanced technology for the better. Also, I agree with your point on the benefit being that science saves human lives and expands our knowledge. Science has done more good than harm because it has revolutionized industry, improved communication, and dramatically increased life expectancy. Therefore, your arguments were good in proving that science is more beneficial than harmful.

    6. Anshul you passage has me pondering about this topic. Your passage was well written and valid and brought up a lot of good points. However there are points that can counter yours and cause me turmoil. This topic is very broad and can go either way. I believe there is no one answer to this and that we must keep an open mind to events that might unfold further down the road.

    7. I agree on your opinion that science has helped our world more than it has harmed. You mentioned about how efficient technology makes us in the classroom to make our lives easier, which was something I did not think of and is very true. Also, science has helped the field of medicine in a tremendous way and helps us communicate with others. I definitely agree when you said the world runs on science and technology because i can't imagine what our lives would be like without all these advancements.

    8. I agree with your blog post fully. Science has definitely made our lives more efficient in many ways. Your examples to support your statement about our lives today better interpreted your point. Some of your facts included I haven't even thought of initially.

  2. Any country, including the US, as a benefit, shouldn’t use drones and mass destruction weapons. Instead we are using them today to "remove" Al-Qaeda groups from countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan, but blindly killing thousands more with them. Just last night the US sent out drones into Pakistan and killed many unarmed citizens. Are we really using these scientific devices for a "benefit"? What benefit are drones bringing us if no countries want us to use them? Guns and bombs never end or reduce wars but promote it. There is no way these weapons are being used as a beneficiary alternative. Additionally, I believe science does more to improve peoples' lives than harm them. For example, we have learned so much more that our ancestors didn't know that help us live longer and better lives. We have learned how to stop diseases through medicine and save millions of lives from science. Also, we have perfected our diet over the centuries using science, something our ancestors couldn't do. Science is used to define many of the thought to be indefinable situations. As I said science is used as a medical enhancer. We have created many machines and medicines that help doctors and make living much easier. Science is definitely improves more peoples lives than harms them.

    1. You're right that drones and certain weapons does not help different war situations, especially with removing troops from Afghanistan. It is not right to be killing these huge amounts of people, "blindly". So, although these weapons do us not so much good, science still plays a major part in our society. It is not the science that is hurting people, rather the people using it to their advantage, but in a harmful way.

    2. Abu, I do agree with you that science does more to improve our lives than harm it. However, in the beginning, you began by discussing the negative aspects of science on our lives and then stated that science is more beneficial to us. I do agree that drones and killing innocent citizens is very wrong, but I just didn't know what side you were on at first. I liked how you mentioned that science has improved our diet over the years, something I never thought of mentioning in my post. I also liked how you said that science has answered the questions that were thought to have been impossible at a certain point in history.

    3. I completely agree with you on this. Science does effect our lives in both negative and positive ways, but the positive outweighs the negative. I liked how you started off sayin bad things about science. I thought that's all you were going to talk about. You should've opened with a more broad statement about the positive and negative effects of science and then when you went into the positive things I said where did this come from, other than there technical things, your ideas were great and agree with them

      Delete
    4. Abu, I agree with you completely on your points that science has done more good than harm. As you have stated in your comment, science has improved the medical field and saved the lives of many. However, there is just two points that you didn't come across. The first point is that science has improved communication in ways that seemed impossible. For example, phones make it easier to talk to others and call for an emergency in times of need. The other point would be that science has led to improvements in industry by making robots and/or other machines do tasks that are impossible for humans. Otherwise, your comment was right on the mark and succeeds to prove your point that science is beneficial to mankind.

    5. Anshul I said that because it is a two part question. He asks in the first part "The question is whether or not being able to undertake those acts is a benefit" Meaning if drones and Mass destruction weapons are beneficial to not. So that is why I talked about both sides i am just answering the question. Good try though!!

  3. First of all, I’d like to go on record for stating that this week’s blog topic is completely irrelevant. After all, even if the world did come to a general consensus that science has harmed (or improved) people’s lives overall, does not mean that the respective nations and people of the world would suddenly stop advancement altogether! Going back to the topic at hand though, I would have to say that science has done more to harm lives than improve them. This is because science has brought about dangerous technology, such as the trebuchet, catapult, firearm, chemical explosive, and most significantly (in our modern world) the nuclear warhead. These weapons (with the exclusion of the nuclear warhead) have all been improved upon to kill more and more each time they were upgraded and/or replaced. I will concede that science has made life easier, HOWEVER it has not done enough to make up for the harm caused by it. True, there are survival stories in the field of medicine that occurred as a result of science advancement, however, (more of than not) we hear of mass murders, or accidents that have occurred. Whether it be the collapse of a building or a bomb gone off too early, science’s advancement is the cause for many deaths. Not only within our country, but throughout the world.

    1. If you think about it, more advancements in science would actually IMPROVE the stability of buildings and consistency of the timing of bombs. As the world becomes more alert and nimble, we will improve the efiiciency of our weapons and regulate how much they can be used, if tolerated at all. Science has brought dangerous technology, but I rarely EVER hear of things such as the "nuclear warhead" being used. The UN is also working to make certain laws, or rules against dangerous weapons, such as the current debate of Iran and their nuclear weapons which havent even been utilized yet. According to scientificamerican.com, for every one person that is killed due to science, FIVE people are saved. Also, the first two sentences of your blog did not really make sense to me.

      Delete
    2. Science has definitely made how we live better and beneficial. Science has saved many lives, but brought many down with them. HOWEVER, if you look at the study's science has saved more lives than killed more people. War is actually something thats you can't hide from. Whether you have scientific weapons or swords people are still going to die. I agree with rob scientific advancements have actually helped humanity rather than damaged it. Other than that you made really good arguments.

      Delete
    3. Okay, I understand now. However, he was just asking if science has done better or worse for our world. He wasn't asking if we should or shouldn't stop advancement. But that was a good point anyway.

      Delete
    4. Sai, I have to disagree with you on this. I see where you're coming from with the threat of dangerous weapons that could harm so many people, but like Abu said, I think science has saved a great amount of people, more than it really has harmed. Think about all the sick patients throughout the world, and how science and technology have done so much to cure and aid these people back to health. Also, like I mentioned in my post, communication has definitely been a huge benefit of science. Billions of phone calls and trillions of text messages are sent everyday that bring people around the world closer together. Like Robert stated, I think this blog was mostly on the opinion of whether science has improved our lives or hurt it, not whether or not the advancement of science will proceed or not.

    5. I have to say I don't agree with you, what about medicine and all these great electronics that are being created. I know there are some harmful scientific advancements, but as a matter of fact, only twice have atom bombs have been used, both by us. I understand that we have obtained them, most likely they will probably never be used again after seeing the destruction they cause. So if you think about it that way, the positive effects outweigh the negative. But I do agree with you that this blog is kind of irrelevant.

    6. Sai, although your points were strong and create a good argument, I have to disagree with you. Science has done more to improve our lives than to harm them because it has paved the way for solutions to many problems. I know how you said that dangerous weapons of destruction are created from science, but you aren't looking at the other side of the spectrum here. There are many more pros to science than cons when you look throughout history. Science has not only improved the medical field ten fold, but has improved agriculture and communication. Also, adding on to what Abu said about wars going on no matter. Therefore, science has done more good than bad.

      Delete
    7. Sai, although weapons of mass destruction have definitely harmed us in the past, science has had far more benefits on humans. We have made several discoveries about different environments, the world around us, and even ourselves. With the medical advances, people are able to live much longer and healthier lives than they were able to in the past. Also, like Anshul stated in her post, science has improved our methods of communication greatly. I mean, think about it- there are definitely many more benefits.

      Delete
    8. Sai I am not saying I agree or disagree with your perspective all I'm saying is I see where you are coming from and you have made your argument and points very valid. I see how medicine has advanced but due to that advancement new unknown bacteria and plagues have erupted. Also how science has been used in greed and evil intent such as chemical weapons and nuclear warheads. Anyways good job but I cannot choose a side.

      Delete
    9. Sai, I have to disagree with you on this one. You emphasized on the weapons and mass destruction, but made the medical advancements seem like nothing. Science has saved more lives than it has harmed. Think about the infections and deadly diseases that have been cured through advancements in the medical field. Also, through technological advancements we can communicate with others in a matter of seconds. You made a really good argument, but I believe the positives outweigh the negatives.

      Delete
    10. Sai, I definitely do not agree with your overall point of science harming the world more than improving it. Without science, we would not be where we are today with the technological advancements and medicine. If you think about it, science has improved our world much more than harming it. Science is modernizing our world and allowing it to become more advanced. What can be so harmful about that?

      Delete
    11. Although I believe that science does more improve to lives than harm but I pretty agree with you. However, I think the Earth will destroyed by human along with the improving of science. Technology does make our life easier, but sometimes it comes up a lot of new problems. And, if science can reduce its harm like it does today and the future, I would rather not having these modern technology....

    12. Wow, you almost changed my opinion! So I congratulate you on that, but I still have a firm belief that science has benefited us in evolution as a species, and making the world safer, by extending our lives, and creating defense from natural disasters. -Tom Hindle

    13. I'm going to have to disagree with your post. I won't lie.. you did add great points that I hadn't thought of but it didn't persuade me in changing my initial decision. Think of it this way.. without many science advances we wouldn't be where we are today. The benefits of science definitely overweigh the few negativities of science.

      Delete
  4. The evolution of science has both negative and positive effects. However, the benefits of science are much greater in significance compared to the cons. Sure, the population is expanding at a high rate and with science it only allows the population to grow even more and weapons of mass destruction and drones may not be very beneficial for everybody. But, when you look at the good things science can and has done to improve our lives, it all becomes clear to you now. I am first going to start off with how it has cured sicknesses. Think of a time you’ve been utterly sick, or even just sick. How terrible did that make you feel? It makes you feel like you just want to beat that sickness down if you could. Also, it is very, very sad when people get extremely serious illnesses/ diseases like cancer or even the shingles. Without scientific advances, there would be no way of curing these and getting better. Without the medicinal breakthroughs, a vast amount of people would just die off. Or, for example, if they had ear infections, they would just end up going deaf. Science helps us to understand the world in an interesting, yet complex way. It makes our way of life much more peaceful. Without the world’s great knowledge of science, I truly feel our world would very much likely come to a close. Our everyday lives would be reckless and chaotic, I mean science is all around us. If you fool around with it, meaning the world and its environment, it is very risky and who knows what could happen with a whole planet of people with a small knowledge of science and the study of life? The world would slowly deteriorate, as we would have slim to none advances in medicine, or in everyday life including new inventions and easier ways to go about life. Some of these things include easier ways of traveling, experimenting, operating, and the list goes on. Science improves our lives greatly, every single day.

  5. As of now, science is playing a major role in our society. New developments in technology are defining our world as we know it like advancements in medicine, weaponry, and everyday electronics. Now is this a good thing or a bad one. Do the positive effects outweigh the negative or vice versa. I believe the positive effects do outweigh the negative in today's world. If you think about it, so many good things have come out of science, treatments for different diseases, new generations of electronics come out every year with new features in each version, and don't even get me started about the final frontier. The list goes on and on with endless possibilities for the future. Although there are some negative effects of science on modern society like nuclear weapons, the evolvement of second personalities on social networks, and let's not forget one of the most infamous uses of science and technology, propaganda. It is a mixed up world that science plays a big role in, and in some cases science makes it messed up. But, despite this, science has so many positive effects on society that they leave the negative effects in the dust. Science has the biggest effects on the human race in today's world, and is currently paving a way for great things to come.

As we heard in JSA it is the people that are using science in the wrong way. I would've liked to see you go more into the positives of science and what things it has brought about. Just a little bit more in detail. But, otherwise I completely agree with you. Science has given us much needed explanations and the benefits outweigh the doubt. Otherwise, great job I-an I completely agree with you.

    4. Ian, I liked the evidence you used to make your point, however I am going to have to disagree with your opinion. This is mainly due to the fact that you did not mention why “science has [had] so many positive effects on society that they leave the negative effects in the dust”. You also did not talk about how the knowledge we’ve obtained through science could be used and manipulated by those who wished to do so. However, I did like how you provided an adequate amount of evidence against the point you were making. This made your post less biased and as a result more plausible. Lastly, I liked your closing statement because it ended on a neutral note by not stating whether the effects of science would be bad or good.

    5. Ian, I completely agree with you that science has done more good than harm. As you mentioned there have been treatments for different diseases and technological advancements such as new devices that come out every year. I really like your statement that science is paving a way for great things to come because the future holds endless possibilities.

  6. Science has done more in all of history to improve lives, not harm them. Science has been responsible for saving the lives of millions of people each day, extending life expectancy and creating safer alternatives to curing diseases/illnesses. Even though, science has created countless dangerous weapons, it has been known to alleviate certain situations in some case. For example, without new technological advancements taking place nations couldn't be better suited to defend themselves during times of war. The effect of science can be seen everyday in classrooms providing intuitive ways to teach like Anshul had stated in her blog. Science is the best way to explore new things about our ever changing world and find the solutions to countless problems. The many technological advancements derived from science are phones, computers, new factory machinery(food production has increased greatly due to science), and new sources of communication.Being able to undertake certain situations with science is clearly a benefit because it opens the doors to saving human life and expanding knowledge. With science, we are able to communicate and travel easily as well. Although there are some risks and negative effects science creates, there are still many more benefits. Science has shaped the world we live in and changed our lives. Furthermore improvements in science and technology have revolutionized industry and made many things possible. We have to take a look at the many benefits science has created and compare it to the negative consequences. The answer we will find is that science has definitely done more to improve lives than to harm them.

    1. I completely agree with your blog. Science has made classrooms interactive and more helpful than ever for children. Not only that science is a life saver as you said. Additionally, I have to say that it isn't science that is really the problem it is the people. Many people decide to discover the negative aspects of science rather than the positives. That is why we have so many drones and weapons, THE PEOPLE. Science has definitely made how we live better and beneficial. Science has saved many lives, but brought many down with them. If you look at the study's science has saved more lives than killed more people. Science is the hero of this century and has allowed us to benefit in so many places.

    2. There is also a point you missed that i forgot to mention. You never included the fact that the diet was perfected. This is key because science is used to tell what we need in our body and what we don't. A diet is a key element our ancestors didn't have and also supports the fact that we live longer because of it.

  7. Although the advancements in science have had some bad effects, I believe that science has done a lot more to help our lives, rather than to harm them. Over the years, we have improved and benefited greatly from the advancements in science, which has given us so many advantages. With science, we have been able to figure out countless things that people in the past just weren’t able to do. For example, people have greatly expanded their knowledge in medical sciences. This has allowed millions of sick, diseased people all around the world the privilege of living longer, healthier lives- and we are only continuing to move forward with this. Not only that, but with science, we have learned so much about the world we live in, which is another clear advantage. With this, people have the knowledge of the things around them, and know how to manage both themselves and others in certain circumstances, or during dangerous situations such as natural disasters. It is essential to know about the Earth and how it works, and science has helped us do just that. So, having said that, science has definitely done a lot to improve our lives. Of course, there are certain situations in which science has harmed people (such as the development of dangerous weapons), but other than that, scientific advancements have helped the people of mankind improve greatly.

I just wanted to say that some discoveries, observations and theories people made in the past are the reasons why we are able to figure out why certain things occur. However, it is because of those people's theories, observations, questioning and discoveries that we are able to come to a conclusion about certain aspects of the world.

  8. Science has had it's ups and downs, but is more beneficial than harmful. Science has let our world advance greatly in many ways. Science has let us experience the world, has given us technology, and has increased the knowledge of many. Where would we be without medicine, something that science has created. What about the fact that we have this amazing technology that science has helped create. Its great to be able to use a computer, or a phone, etc. Technology has helped us learn more and stay in touch with others.Science has let us know about our surroundings and what we can survive in or not. It is an essential to have science in the world because it helps a person survive in many ways also. We use science all the time and don't even know it. Science has let us make food, take showers, have medicine, be safe, etc. Without science, we wouldn't be as intelligent as we are today. Science has had its cons though, such as the construction of weapons for example, but with every good comes some bad. Although that was said, science is more beneficial in a person's life than it is harmful.

    1. Hava, I have to say that I completely agree with you. Science definitely is more beneficial than it is harmful. You had some great points, such as science is all around us and we don't even realize it! Also, you mentioned that science lets us do the simplest things in life, such as heat food up, and we don't even acknowledge the fact. Technology and communication, like I also stated, has been proven to be extremely useful and convenient, especially since you can hardly pass someone on the street without an iPhone or some kind of Apple product! I really loved how you said "...with every good comes some bad" because that is definitely true. Not everything can be perfect and happy all the time, there will always be some sort of negative attribute that will come along, like drones and weapons of mass destruction.

      Delete
    2. Hava, I have to say that I disagree with you. When you stated that “technology has helped us learn more” you did not mention that this knowledge could be accessed by anyone with any intentions. Also, I felt as if you were stating that science has made life easier, not improved it entirely. After all, we would still be alive without science and still would be able survive. In simple terms what I am saying is that we could survive without (scientific) advancement and do without what it has produced (good and bad). Lastly, I felt as if you did not go into enough detail about the cons of science as there are many more than what you stated.

      Delete
    3. Hey Hava I do agree with your points but up to a certain extent. Your arguments on how science made us smarter was similar to mine and it is true but you never really talked about how bad science can be. Think of the countless people that science has killed over the years.

    4. Hava, good post. I like how you stated that science helps us perform tasks that we never even think twice about, like taking a shower or drinking water. I focused my post more on the greater developments science has offered in the world. You are certainly correct when you say that we would be nowhere without science.

    5. I like how you stated the idea that science brings us closer together as a species. We can now communicate with the other side of the world through scientific evolution. Without these communications, we would feel rather small compared to how we do now. Also, it would leave a feeling of fear, because there would be not much known. "Hence the -"world is flat" - theory". -Tom Hindle

  9. I believe science is like a double edge blade due to the fact that it has helped improve many lives however it also has caused many problems and strife. For example, science helped expand the life span of people and cure diseases that were once considered to be incurable. However this led to the creation of other much more aggressive diseases and viruses. Also advancements in science caused people to unlock the power of atoms and particles which ultimately led to the invention of the Atomic bomb which devastated japan during the second world war. Science also helped improve the way we communicate and interact with one another it has expanded our understanding of the world around us. So I believe it is a stalemate between the good and bad that has come from science and knowing.

    1. David, I could not agree more with your neutral like opinion regarding this week’s blog topic. I too originally felt conflicted as to whether or not science has done more good than bad. There have been just too many events that occurred (good or bad) as a result of science. I really liked how you not only talked about how science has helped us (communication for example) but how it truly changed the course of history (atomic bomb) as well. It was quite mature of you to concede that you could not formulate a well-developed opinion on this controversial topic. Very nice job!

    2. Overall i can't see if you are pro or con. Im not saying this is a debate but i want to say you should've picked a pro or con side. Your blog seemed a little confusing. Additionally, you should've went more in detail and explained your beliefs. I would've liked to see that. There are many more points you could've touched than what you said.

    3. Hey David good article it was short simple and to the point. I agree with you neutral siding because it is very hard to choose one side with all the negative and positive effects, We used the same analogy about science being a double edge blade mainly because it was 100% true.

  10. Science is an ever growing part of humanity that benefits us more than it does harm. Science is always paving new advancements in the medical field to cure diseases and save lives. From transplanting organs or getting a routine blood test done, science has tremendously impacted the medical field. Science is also helping us communicate faster than ever before. We can talk to or FaceTime others that are thousands of miles away in a matter of seconds. I am aware science can be negatively used for weaponry and mass destruction, but the positives outweigh the negatives. As time progresses scientific advancements will help our lives be more efficient. Without science, the knowledge acquired about the physical world, our current lives would be very tremendously different. The future hold endless possibilities in what we could accomplish with the knowledge we acquire.

    1. I agree with your opinion Akshay. When you talked about the amount of knowledge aquired from science just helps to prove science had benefited us more than it has hamed. You didn't really talk about how science can be bad, just to show some of the cons can actually help your argument.

  11. Science is the basis of the world we live today, and with out it we wouldn't be such complex organisms. Being curious and discovering new ideologies and theories is what science is all about. Science might seem great but the ugly truth is that science not only benefits society, it also has a negative impact on us. In my opinion I believe that the benefits out weight the drawbacks and that overall science is beneficial. Science is very interpretive (just like history!) so its up to society to determine what's right and what's wrong but either way there are both good and bad when it comes to science its like a double edged sword. On one hand you have all this great technology we use today including phones and tablets and the very computer I'm writing my blog with, as well as many other advances that help civilization. Then on the other hand you have all of these weapons of mass destruction and drones that cause harm and kill people. Overall, we may do stupid things because humans are not perfect (including the scientists), but we always try to have the right intentions and that's why science is more beneficial then harmful. Curiosity may have killed the cat but satisfaction brought it back to life.

  12. Science is the study of the world around us through observations and experiments. Science is improving the world rather than harming it. Advancements in studies, theories, observations and experiments make great impacts that improve and reform society. Although science does involve a process of trial and error, the errors we make can benefit future scientists in preventing those mistakes. It results in an increase in experience with the world of science, which allows us to become advanced and more modernized, overall improving lives. Science consists of three main branches dealing with biology, physics and chemistry. Advancements in biological science has increased knowledge about the human body and its functions. Human beings have led to developing new medicines that cure many diseases such as the influenza and other infections including strep throat. Scientists such as Copernicus made the heliocentric theory which stated that the sun was the center of the universe. Johannes Kepler used math to test and validate his theory. Galileo created an improved version of the telescope in order to assist Kepler. These scientists made expansions within the branch of physics. These advancements did nothing but improve on the lives of human beings. As a final point, progressions dealing with the scientific branch of chemistry benefits society as well. Chemistry is used in order to make new plastics that can be more environmentally friendly. They are able to be recycled and reused, which results in a decrease of dumping wastes into landfills. Overall, science does result in mistakes which may harm society, but in the long run, we learn from these mistakes and prevent making them once again, allowing us to improve the world with science.

    1. I couldn't agree with you anymore and your opinion. The fact that you talked about the different science fields, and what each one has to offer, you really defended your point well. I didn't even think about all the fields while writing about my opinion. Good job overall.

  13. I believe that science does more to improve lives than it does harm. Science and technology affects us all, everyday of the year, from the moment we wake up, all day long and through the night. Our digital alarm clock, the smart phone we use, and the weather report...The modern world we live today would not be modern without the understandings and technology enabled by science. However, many people say that the Earth will destroyed by human along with the improving of science. Science does effect our lives in both positive and negative ways. An example for the negative way, dynamite. Alfred Nobel was the inventor of dynamite but he never wonder dynamite will be use in warfare instead of just using for mining. I think science itself doesn't do anything "wrong"...There is nothing in the world has only positive influence. Science harms the world today from some perspective is because of later human's desire. But in all, I think science does more to improve lives, without science, we may still wearing animal skins from an animal you had to kill with your bare hands to get it from. No electricity, no cures for disease, no technology, no anything but you drill wood to get fire.

    1. I completely agree with you. I like how you pointed out that "Science" itself does nothing wrong, in fact is how the people interpret or use it. Also, the human desire effect also ties in with how I feel if scientific advancements didn't exist today, no one would be able to function properly. -Tom Hindle

  14. I understand this blog's topic as.. "Should science progress for the future, and should we benefit from it?". Well, let's start off with my opinion. Science, is what allows us to evolve as human-beings. Without "evolving", we would still be stuck in a prehistoric-like era of time. Time, as we know it, changes, and moves on, whether or not we are ready for it to do so. Science, also changes, whether we are ready or not. I say this, because of the controversial luxury/necessity, the cellphone. Some swear by its existance and importance in society, while others feel it takes away from "the moment", and makes us less-human. But, what about medicine? Medicine greatly benefited from the evolution of science. But, let's take all of our scientific advancements away... No more traveling, no more time-keeping (by digital means), no more medicine, no sanitary water/food, and no law to keep us safe. Science has done nothing to "set us back" as humans, so-to-say. In fact, as much as people try to discredit science, they wouldn't last a single-day without it. -Thomas Hindle

    1. Yes, the "scary" thing about science is it does "bad" things, and we can't live without it. I agree with "Science, is what allows us to evolve as human-beings."
Without science, we won't live a easy and comfortable life like we did today. And who can imagine what the society will be in the next 20 years??

  15. The process of science is a way of building knowledge about the universe and constructing new ideas that illuminate the world around us. In my opinion, I feel science definitely does more to improve our lives rather than harm. There are many factual events that have occurred that showed science effects us beneficially. It plays many roles in improving our lives. It helps with the design of realistic alternative energy sources, develop new forms of communication, help people create more sustainable lives, and especially discover new medicines and vaccines for treating killer diseases and such. Although science has led to signs of negative results sometimes, they’ve usually converted to positive in various ways. Additionally, think of the greatest scientists of all time. Without their scientific works, we probably wouldn’t be where we are today. Relating science to the three rules of history, it can be interpretive and can also be a series of dots with cause and effect. Overall, the sciences in general bring progression to our lives and without the advances that might have been bad initially, life would be less unproblematic.
