Is the earth heating up? Is the earth cooling off? Are traditional places around the world that experience traditional winters becoming tropical? Or is the planet experiencing yet another flux in its history of temperature changes?
Your answer may vary depending on what side of the global warming (now officially known as "climate change") debate you may be on. Some believe that if you don't believe in global warming than you are "uneducated" - even to the point that some scientist that have spoken out against the argument that there is a dangerous rise in temperatures around the world have been shunned by members in the science community.
Yet, there is evidence that shows that the throughout the history of the earth it has always fluctuated between a number of years of which the planet warmed and a number of years of which the earth cooled. Scientist that argue against the idea of global warming state that the earth's rotation "wobbles" and throughout time the earth's axes moves slightly; which has a direct effect on the temperatures around the globe.
There is plenty of information out there that present both sides of this argument. I would highly encourage you to take a look at them. It's always important to know both sides of a debate.
BLOG QUESTION:
What is your opinion about Global Warming (or if you want to be politically correct today, you can call it "Climate Change")? Defend your point of view.
Global climate change is a controversial topic in which many say that it does not exist, and others claim that it does. In my opinion, global climate change does exist and is affecting our planet negatively as we speak. According to NASA, as of July 2013, the levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in Earth’s atmosphere are higher than ever. CO2 is a greenhouse gas that is emitted by humans into the atmosphere when burning fossil fuels. For example, using electricity and vehicles fueled by gasoline emit these gases. Greenhouse gases trap heat on the Earth’s surface, known as the greenhouse effect, which contributes to the climate changes of our planet. Other gases that trap heat in the Earth’s atmosphere include methane and nitrous oxide. These climate changes also occur through slight fluctuations of Earth’s orbit that varies the amount of sunlight our planet receives. (NASA) There is evidence that our planet is changing its climate and will continue to do so throughout the future. The 10 warmest years have occurred in the past 12 years. (NASA) Warmer temperatures are causing glaciers to melt, leaving many animals that live in those conditions, such as polar bears without a habitat. The melting of glaciers also results in higher sea levels. The rate of the rise of sea level for the past decade is approximately 34 centimeters, which is double the rise of sea level in the past century. (NASA) All in all, global climate change is a growing issue that should not be ignored. If the human population is contributing to this climate change, it can also be able to assist in reducing the intensification of temperatures. Something as simple as turning off the lights when exiting a room can be beneficial. Walking, riding a bike, taking the bus or carpooling to school/work is also a way to reduce the amounts of CO2 radiated into the atmosphere. Recycling plastic bottles, cans, and paper results in less waste being dumped into landfills and being able to use our resources once again. Even though humans are not the only cause of the global climate change, they do contribute in emitting greenhouse gases that trap heat to the surface of the Earth. Global climate change is not a trivial issue due to the fact that it is negatively affecting all aspects of our planet throughout the years and will continue to do so in the future as well.

DeleteKushali, I completely agree with your opinion on global climate change. It is definitely an issue that is affecting the world in a negative way. I like that you included some facts, because they helped support your opinion even more...especially the fact that "the rate of the rise of sea level for the past decade is approximately 34 centimeters, which is double the rise of sea level in the past century". Overall, you expressed your thoughts very well. Great post.
DeleteKushali, like paige said I agree with your perspective not this topic. I believe that you points really supported your main argument. I like how you talked about the greenhouse effect and the effect human waste has on the environment. I too talked about the rising water level and how it can be directly linked to the melting of the polar ice caps. All in all good job.
DeleteI completely agree with you. Global Warming to climate change is definitely present in todays world and is a huge issue. I like how you said Global Warming is causing the world to have "The 10 warmest years have occurred in the past 12 years. (NASA)". Hopefully, people see this is a huge issue and stop polluting as the usually do. If they don't the ozone layer will be depleted and the world will come to an end as the result of the suns hot rays. Just looking at the past evidence it is almost obvious. Don't you think? This is a key issue and we need a quick solution.
DeleteKushali, I agree with you 100%. You had some great facts from NASA to really help and build a solid backbone for your argument. The global climate change does have a negative effect on the globe. Also, you made a believable argument and supported it greatly. The mention of the melting polar icecaps was also good.
DeleteHey kushali good blog I like all the facts you included because they help comprehend what the climate change is really about. I really liked how you talked about human waste because we are also responsible for what's going on. Great blog
DeleteGlobal Climate Change is the dramatic alteration in the Earth’s temperature that has had significant effects on our environment. Of course, the earth’s temperature has changed erratically over the years, but there’s no doubt that this is not just another similar situation to those of the past. Lately, there have been many indications showing that Global Climate Change is a real thing that is gradually beginning to affect us all. The main cause of this worldwide issue is ultimately due to the excessive use/releasing of harmful gases from fossil fuels such as Carbon Dioxide or Methane into the atmosphere. From there, the gases get trapped into the atmosphere due to a process known as the Greenhouse Effect. The Greenhouse Effect already traps the sun’s heat into our atmosphere, and the constant overuse of harmful gases only makes the situation worse. With increased greenhouse gas emissions and heat from the sun, the greenhouse gases slow the rate at which the Earth loses infrared radiation, keeping them in our atmosphere for a longer period of time. This causes the Earth’s surface to become warmer- and evidence proves this to be correct. For example, the Polar ice caps have been melting at very fast rates, leaving animals of the region without homes, and thus putting them into dangerous situations. Plus, with the warmer temperatures come stronger hurricanes and storms. The warm water gives hurricanes more power, making them much stronger- and recent hurricanes like Hurricane Sandy or Hurricane Irene indicate the proof.
ReplyDeleteOf course, there is no way to completely stop Global Climate Change from occurring, but there are ways to help. For example, we can simply take shorter showers or turn off the water when brushing our teeth. When commuting, it is best to walk or bike ride- or even carpool, if necessary. Taking simple actions like these can significantly affect the world in a positive way; and I feel that Global Climate Change is an issue that should not be ignored any longer.
Paige, I strongly agree with your agreement I believe that your points really help your argument and you even included things I didn't. I especially like how you described greenhouse gases and the greenhouse effect. I too agree with your perspective about the polar ice caps. Great Job.
DeleteI like your post! Many people years earlier didn't realize the potential and cause of Global Warming, but these years, we can see it coming. Every time when I think about the potential effect of global warming, I touched and start protecting the environment in life. Good work again~
DeleteI completely agree with your argument. I like how included facts about greenhouse gases, the polar ice caps, and natural disasters. I also loved how you proposed ways that we could prevent global climate change from getting any worse than it already is. Nice job.
DeletePaige, nice post. I like how you included that our over usage of the fossil fuels are making the global climate change situation even worse. Another point of yours in which I also found interesting was how you said that warmer temperatures bring about stronger hurricanes and storms. This is certainly true since we experienced such a severe hurricane just last year.
DeleteLike how everyone else commented, I also agree with your post. Warmer temperatures will bring us tropical storms, like Sandy and Katrina, and Irene. Thus, causing more damage. We, like I mentioned on another post, should seriously consider taking action to help the Earth.
DeleteGlobal warming is in fact a very serious issue that has had a very big effect on the earth over the past years. If you do not believe me then take a look at the frigid temperatures that struck the whole country this week. Temperature got as cold as -40 degrees near Wisconsin and Chicago. Here in the state of new jerseys temperatures were about -5 degrees. It was the coldest couple of days in the last 30 years. If you still believe that this is just some natural occurrence then take a look at the sea level and the land area of both the north and south poles. The geographic location and area of the poles is drastically changing due to large chunks breaking of glaciers. When this ice melts the water gets added on to the sea level. In the last decade the ice has been melting at such a fast rate that the sea level has risen quite significantly. According to the Global Mean Sea Level, it has risen about 8 inches over the past century. This has caused many places at low sea level to flood and thusly having a great impact on the shoreline. Human waste is not helping the cause, in fact everyday we hurt the planet even more. With garbage weighing in the tons by one town, its not a surprise that are planet is changing. Items like aluminum and Styrofoam have cause the planet and its ecosystems a great deal of pain. Many people have put this issue as a secondary manner but I believe that the time is here and now to find a solution this huge mess before it becomes a catastrophe.
ReplyDeleteDavid, I agree with you on the fact that global climate change is a very serious issue. It surely has had some major effects on the world over the years. I like how you brought up the recent weather conditions and the effects of the polar ice caps melting. Many people may not know it, but global climate change really is affecting us in a bad way- and you showed that in your post.
DeleteI agree with your entire argument. Especially the part about human waste. It is because of us that this problem is occurring. With all the pollution in the air, our ozone layer is diminishing. if we don't cut down or put an end to this pollution, we could have and even worse problem than we already have. I also found the fact about the modern day sea level interesting.
DeleteDavid I completely agree with you. Indeed global warming is a big issue. Climate change is a big fear for humans and we should do whatever it takes to solve this issue. Also, the pollution people are putting out makes the situation even worse!! Our ozone layer is quickly diminishing. If it does diminish we would stand no chance to survive the suns harmful rays. Also, from my aspect global warming is definitely present. Just looking at the past evidence it is almost obvious. Don't you think? This is a key issue and we need a quick solution.
DeleteGreat points David. Your information included truly displayed the horrifying qualities of the global climate change. It also persuaded me to help in taking action to avoid the atrociousness. Afterall, human activity is stated as being a huge involvement with global warming. I liked how you included the calculations of the Global Mean Sea Level which really fascinated me. Additionally, having very recent examples further evaluated your opinion.
DeleteDavid, you brought up great points. The fact that we are building up garbage in those amounts is crazy. Also, these landfills build up and there is even a body of water with just water bottles and garbage filled around the area. Like i've said before, stop with the plastic bottles, they are not good for you or the environment.
DeleteGreat points David. To be honest, yes our temperatures are rising, but, for example, this past week, they are also decreasing. It could just be a phase, like you mentioned! How do we know that the Earth won't cool down within the next ten or twenty years?
DeleteThere is a lot of garbage circulating. Like Rob mentioned above, stop using water bottles. Not saying I don't, I DO use water bottles, but everyone should stop and help the environment, even in just a simple way.
Hey David good blog I how you related to the actual tempertature in the world now. It's easier to comprehend global warming when you relate it to real life weather. I also liked how you talked about the sea levels rising because some people don't know it actually effects us.
DeleteDavid, you provided great facts and a very solid argument that I agree with. Climate change is affecting us and as you mentioned the weather we had in the past week was not a natural occurrence. As sea levels rise it disrupts our planet in a negative way. With all the pollution occurring we as people of the Earth must change our old habits for a clean and green Earth. Great Post!
DeleteThe weatherman lied! I insist on this standpoint! Their main goal is to cause mass hysteria for ratings! It was 5 Degrees F, but they stated it felt like -15 Degrees F! However, with sophisticated re-wording, they managed to trick their audience into believing the actual temperatures. Indeed, it was extremely cold, but politically, and through media, they are trying to trick our viewpoint.
DeleteSince long before human exist, the climate of the Earth has warmed and cooled for millions of years. Undoubtedly, the Earth has become warmer over the last century. IPCC reports that the average surface temperature of the earth has increased during the 20th century by about 0.4° C or 0.8°C. The numbers may seemed very small, but the global temperature mainly depends on how much energy the planet receives from the Sun and how much it radiates back into space, the amount of energy radiated by the Earth depends significantly on the chemical composition of the atmosphere, particularly the amount of heat-trapping greenhouse gases. Believe it or not, the difference between the average global temperature during the last IceAge and the average global temperature of today is only about 5 degrees C. However, according to the scientists, if the world temperature keeps rising, (well, it does all the time), ice sheets and glaciers will met, and the level of the ocean will rise, inundating many lower areas. For instance, areas like Venice will be drowned. In the same time, the summers becomes hotter and hotter, winters becomes colder and colder, and there will be more catastrophic natural disasters happen. Most climate scientists agree the main cause of the current global warming trend is human expansion of the "greenhouse effect", which when the atmosphere traps heat radiating from Earth toward space, it results the warming . However, we, normal people can do something to slow the global warming such as use less heat and air conditioning, drive less, buy energy efficient products and plant trees. Global climate changing is getting more and more serious, many experts think that the outbreak of cold current in America this winter, which is the coldest winter among 20 years, is a cause of global warming. We should protect the environment and reduce carbon emission, not only for the people in the future for ourself!
ReplyDeleteYou had many awesome ideas in this post. I particularly like the part about the comparison between our average temperature and the last ice age's average temperatures. I always thought the ice ages would have catastrophically low temperatures but only 5 degrees Celsius less is crazy. I also liked how you mention that places who close to sea level would be submerged under water due to the melting of the polar ice caps. Good job
DeleteGemma, your facts really interested me in further researching about certain aspects of global warming I didn't really know. I can't believe the drastically low temperatures of the ice age were only 5 degrees Celsius less than today's global temperature! Including the situation of the "greenhouse effect" is vital because it has a major relation with global warming. Humanity is bound to decrease negatively if we don't take action soon and it is better to be safe than sorry.
DeleteIn my opinion, "Global Warming", is an incorrect term. As David pointed out, in this past week, there were record setting lows, so the term global climate change suits the situation much better. Anyway, these fluctuations in temperature are just a series of changes in the earth's multiple climates. As said in the opening statement, our earth may wobble on our axis, thus causing weather patterns to get all messed up. Once the axis is in its slightly different position, most likely these fluctuations would stop. But whose to say when that could happen, it could 10, 100, or even 1000 years for this climate change to settle down. This is why it is such a huge problem. With the higher temperatures in spring through fall, the polar ice caps are melting at a pretty fast rate. If the temperatures get to high, the caps could totally melt and cause floods as depicted in 2012, the movie. But, since the melting is very gradual, there ways we could prevent this climate problem from getting any worse. The holes in our ozone layer that are causing these changes are made by being exposed to gases such as carbon dioxide and methane. If the world could use more natural resources instead of harmful ones, we could prevent those holes from getting any bigger. Global climate change is very hot topic in the world today, and we should take action to prevent from getting any worse.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I agree with you. Actually, if you visit NASA's website, you will find they don't usually use the term "Global Warming", but using "Climate Change" instead. Literally, Global warming means the increase in Earth’s average surface temperature due to rising levels of greenhouse gases and Climate change means a long-term change in the Earth’s climate, or of a region on Earth. So the term "Global warming" is a little narrow to explain our climate today! Good job!^_^
DeleteI-an, just because of a single week or two weeks of cold weather you can't say that there is no longer climate change. The warming of weather has been consistent for a very long time and shows that there is definitely climate change. Also you said, "This is why it is such a huge problem. With the higher temperatures in spring through fall, the polar ice caps are melting at a pretty fast rate. If the temperatures get to high, the caps could totally melt and cause floods as depicted in 2012, the movie." This shows evidence that there is climate change and weather is warming up quicker than ever. Certainly the Earth isn't going to jump 70 degrees higher in one year that is impossible (unless the ozone layer disappears). I disagree with you, but you made some very good points.
DeleteI agree with some of your points, and yet at the same time I disagree with your other points. I agree with how you said the polar ice caps are beginning to melt at a fast rate and how the intensification of the climate is a huge problem. However, global warming is not necessarily an incorrect term. The climate of the Earth is certainly warming up, whether it be gradually or rapidly. So basically, both terms are relevant towards this situation. Other than that, you had many other good points.
DeleteI-an, you said that Global Climate Change would be a better term for Global Warming, but then you sort of confused me. You then starting talking about the earth's axis and its movement, but then you started talking about the effects of Global Warming. Maybe you couldve been a little clearer because i wasnt sure what sides you were standing for, they contradicted themselves. I also didnt know what you meant by "holes in the ozone layer". I'm sure you knew what you were talking about, i was just unclear. However, i believe that Global Warming is a serious topic today... every person and their actions count. Let's save the world Ian.
DeleteHey Ian, i just wanted to emphasize the importance of cutting water bottles out of your life is, because it does a great deal of harm. Not only does the oil leak from the plastic into your water, but your breathing in the chemicals used to make the plastic when you drink it. Also, the factories used to make these and trucks and planes used to tranport these contribute to the degredation of the ozone layer. I can ramble about the cons of plastic bottles, but i just wanted to add a footnote because not many people realize how big of a role plastic bottles play in Global Warming.
DeleteLooking at all the present evidence global warming, or climate change is very present in todays society. First off global temperatures are rising. According to NASA, "All three major global surface temperature reconstructions show that Earth has warmed since 1880." Ever since then the temperatures have slowly increased, but they are now catching up to us and the weather is warming up more than we can handle. Another reason we know climate change is occurring is because of the sea levels rising. With the weather warmer than ever the ice sheets have massively been melting in the last couple of years. This causes the oceans to rise and if it continues to rise, humanity itself will be enveloped in water. Also if you still don't believe me david made a good point, "...take a look at the frigid temperatures that struck the whole country this week. Temperature got as cold as -40 degrees near Wisconsin and Chicago." This climate change is a record high and is very dangerous for humans if it continues to occur. Additionally, the CO2 output humans have not only affect the temperatures, but also acidity in the ocean. Since the industrial revolution the acidity has increased about 30%. This could later cause acid rain (due to water cycle), which is extremely hazardous. Also CO2 as well as other gasses have caused the ozone layer to slowly diasappear. If we no longer have an ozone layer we will have no protection from the sun's harmful rays. Scientists are right temperatures are very wobbly and higher than ever. Overall, climate change is a big fear for humans and we should do whatever it takes to solve this issue. If we don't take immediate action humanity as we know it will come to an end.
ReplyDeleteAbu, your blog post included all the correct details about the major effects of global climate change. My blog post consisted of a similar overall opinion as well. NASA has concluded that 97% of climate scientists believe that human activity plays a major role in global warming. I believe that if society helps with prevention of this problem, global climate change can gradually convert in its harmfulness.
DeleteI agree with you Abu. You hit some good points and it is intriguing, yet daunting that the ocean' acidity level has gone up to 30% since the Industrial Revolution, and this could cause acid rain. All of these possible events like the world being enveloped in water due to melting ice caps coming together seem to be very similar to what people predicted in 2012. I'm sure if this ticking-time bomb does go off, the people of the world will feel great remorse for everything theyve done to contribute to Global Climate Change. Hopefully, it does not occur.
DeleteAbu, your post was short and to the point and contained a lot of great facts and statistics. I would like to point out that you discussed one of the major effects of Global Climate Change that I had not considered, or, moreover, expanded upon, in my answer: rising sea levels and acid rain. It is true that massive ice sheets in the colder parts of the world are beginning to rapidly melt, and then would flow out into the sea, further rising the sea level, which could potentially put the world in extreme danger. Also, I had not known that carbon dioxide affected the acidity in oceans, and now occurs to me that due to the water cycle, like you mentioned, could lead to harmful acid rain. Anyway, I agree that we should do something about this before something drastic happens.

ReplyDeleteYes I agree with you that the climate change is a big fear, even if we can't "solve" the problem, but we can still slow this process. We can't not not realizing how to protect the environment and reduce carbon emission until the Everest is beneath the sea. Good job overall!
ReplyDeleteAbu, I agree very strongly with your perspective on this topic. I took stated that this an issue hat we can not afford to ignore/ Global warming has gotten to a very bad level and is something we must find a solution to or else it will end up costing us a lot.Your points were excellent and you defended you argument well. Good Job
DeleteClimate Change has been an argumentative and “heated” subject for numerous years now. There have been, and currently still are, vast temperature variations throughout the world. I believe that there is such a thing as Global Climate Change and that it should be taken very seriously. Very recently, the United States was struck with ridiculously below zero temperatures and an excessive amount of snowfall because of the cold blast from the Arctic in the north. According to National Geographic, the temperatures in the 1980’s and 1990’s were the hottest in the previous 400 years and the ice and snow in the Arctic is indeed melting at a high rate because of the abnormal warm temperatures. There have been many weather disasters such wildfires caused by heat and dryness, and tropical storms, exactly like Typhoon Haiyan that only just hit the Philippines a couple of months back. As many have mentioned and are familiar with, greenhouse gases are one of the prime factors that majorly affect Global Climate Change. They are meant to trap heat in the Earth’s atmosphere, exactly like greenhouses for plants, only they are negatively affecting our earth even more as of now because they tend to entrap hazardous gases such carbon dioxide, fossil fuels that are burned from vehicles and factories, methane, and many others. I unquestionably believe humans can reduce the possibility of such extreme weather and climate patterns by going green and caring about the planet a lot more than we all are today. Using natural resources, recycling, and consuming less harmful gases and nonrenewable resources can tremendously help bring back normal weather conditions and restore Earth’s atmosphere. If we don’t make an effort to resolve this significant issue, the climates and disasters the Climate Change is causing will continue to substantially affect our world until there may be a time in which the world is no longer a tolerable place to live. Go green or go home!
ReplyDeleteAnshul, in my opinion, this is one of the best posts on this topic I've read so far. I like how you included details about the various climate changes and changes in the environment rather than focusing just on the increasing temperatures on planet Earth. It is correct when you say that the dry and arid weather caused by the heat result in many wildfires. You got me thinking about how the increase in temperatures would affect the places that are already hot and dry. This can also lead to heat stroke and dehydration. I agree with all of your points. Good job.
DeleteWow Anshul, nice examples. Everything you said was true. People most certainly have a major impact on "Global Climate Change", as it's called now. And we have the power to change it. We should promote and encourage others to take actions that will benefit and confirm a healthy Earth for the people that we live here after us.
DeleteThe debatable topic of Global Climate Change has escalated causing controversy throughout the world. Global Climate Change, also referred to as Global Warming is the gradual increase in the temperature of the earth's atmosphere. It is ascribed to the greenhouse effect caused by amplified levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants. My opinion on the highly discussed topic is that global climate change is becoming a serious threat to our society in numerous ways ranging from economically to socially and even politically. I suggest the situation should no longer be ignored and action must be taken soon to assuage its consequences. For future references, it has been predicted that Wisconsin summers in 2095 will be the same as Arkansas summers now. This could potentially pilot to difficult conditions for certain species of plants and animals to withhold or result in disorderly food supply. The populace has generated the belief that global climate change will increase spread of disease from the tropics, rise in sea level which will lead to melting polar ice caps, and more hurricanes or fires. According to NASA, “Ninety-seven percent of climate scientists agree that climate-warming trends over the past century are very likely due to human activities,1and most of the leading scientific organizations worldwide have issued public statements endorsing this position.” The population can contribute in the process of deterrence from global warming by avoiding harmful gases to evade the air such as riding a bike or walking rather than driving in a car. Another instance consists of the popularly preached, recycling. You may not ponder the thought across your mind but the simple procedures of reducing, reusing, and recycling can add as simple supplements in averting of global warming. The slightest of decisions made by people like us can total in causing the grandest of changes. Stated by Science Daily, “The current scientific consensus on climate change is that recent warming indicates a fairly stable long-term trend, which is largely human-caused, and that serious damage may result at some future date if steps are not taken to halt the trend.” As you can conclude from my blog post, global climate change is transferring negative effects to the world we live in and should be put to end immediately to prevent further outcomes that could worsen.
ReplyDeleteI am on Al Gore's side for this topic, and Global Climate Change is occuring based on the evidence at hand. Not only have we been having a drastic change of climate/temperatures for a little while now, but there is clear proof as to why this I happening, it is not the earth's axis' movement. Due to mainly the pollution of humans in many areas, and very much air pollution, the ozone layer gets filled with greenhouse gases that can only lead to chaos. The high amount of these gases in the ozone layer trap heat on the earth causing it to be warmer in the summer/spring time, and it is said it will lead to polar ice caps melting. However, in recent studies, it states that the amount of solar energy reaching the planet has remained relatively stable. It has been recently discovered, just posted a day ago, that "Global Warming" is extremely sensitive to carbon, according to the Guardian. Many different things assist in Global Climat Change. Some of these things include volcanic forcings, the doubling of how much carbon dioxide is in the area, amount of water vapor in the atmosphere, and so on. Moreover, ice melting leads to an increase in absorption of sunlight as it is less reflective, and carbon leaking from melting permafrost and other sources is a positive effect on global warming. There is a very rarely possible attempt at fighting global warming, and that is, depending on the climate, produce more cloud cover to put sunlight back out into space. Furthermore, polar bear exctinction looks as if it is in near light due to the melting ice caps. Remember, this is climate change overall, so the fact that our temperature recently almost went below zero, and it was the lowest in a decade, is something to consider. I have really seen the contrast throughout the years in the climate, as it has been getting colder in the winter/fall, and much warmer in the summer/spring. I feel Global Warming, which I believe can most certainly also be called Global Climate Change (in fact, they should erase Global Warming and change it permanently to Global Climate Change), is something that's terrifying, but also a good warning for us. We NEED to quit the ignorant acts that occur every day. The list goes on. Many include smoking (also leaving the butts on the ground), littering, polluting the wetlands, overuse of cars, and overuse of factories. We need to take a stand as the well-informed, educated people of the earth (especially you science geeks, and that means you David!) By the way, that is not in a bad way. Everyone should try to voice their opinion on this and maybe we can shift the way many people think out there and change their ways, or even start brainstorming on inventions to cut down pollution or clean out the ozone layer and dispursing it into space. I feel it is very possible that in 20 some-odd years the world could end. If we keep going forward like this, what do you think will happen in the future? Think about your kids, and their kids, and their kids, the whole planet, and most importantly you! But dont forget my motto guys, stay positive. There is a great chance that I can be totally wrong about this, I am simply taking an educated guess, no one knows what will happen in the future, even if youre as smart as Dr. Oz. Take your chances and try anything, before it may be too late.
ReplyDeleteRobert, I have to say that this post was by far the most detailed and supported post I have read on this blog, as well as very opinionated if I may add, which is great. I liked how you explained in excruciating detail what Global Climate Change really is and focused on the main causes of it. I definitely agree that pollution is one of the major causes of climate change because of the greenhouse gases that trap them and intoxicate the earth's atmosphere. I loved the fact that you mentioned Al Gore because I completely support his viewpoints on Climate Change and, in my opinion, he should have been elected president! These extreme temperature disasters are definitely a warning and we should think about what would occur in the future if we don't set our minds on finding a solution or working towards making this serious issue better for all of us.
DeleteRobert, your blog was very well argued. You were able to cover most of the aspects when it comes to debating whether global warming is real or not. I agree with all you have said, and especially enjoyed how you connect Al Gore to this. You even touched upon the extinction of animals and how future generations will be effected. I also got a few of the jokes you made through out the blog entry, nice touch.
DeleteTo me, "Global Warming" is too strong of a word for a simple climate change, but that doesn't change the fact that I think it is actually happening. Since the early 20th century, the global air and sea surface temperature has increased. Each of the last three decades has been successively warmer at the Earth’s surface than any preceding decade since 1850. Scientific understanding of the cause of global warming has been increasing. The International Panel on Climate Change reported that scientists were more than 90% certain that most of global warming was being caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases produced by human activities. They also indicated that during the 21st century the global surface temperature is likely to rise a further for their lowest emissions scenario and for their highest. The ranges of these estimates arise from the use of models with differing sensitivity to greenhouse gas concentrations. Global sea levels have rose about 17 centimeters accruing to NASA. NASA also stated that the oceans have absorbed so much of this increased heat, with the top 700 meters of ocean showing warming of 0.302 degrees Fahrenheit. Even the Arctic sea ice has declined by its extent and thickness. The amount of pollution, and such, humankind has let in the air has been making our air unbearable. If we want to make the world a better place, people must be more cautious on how they live, because every little thing counts greatly. Honestly, we all say in our blogs that everyone needs to realize how important this issue is and that we need to be more "green", but if you asked most of us, we wouldn't give a care in the world. That is just the truth, and we will have those who say "No, I really care.", but some just want a good image. In reality, this is a serious issue and caution needs to be taken more SERIOUSLY.
ReplyDeleteHava, I liked some of the statistics you provided to support your opinion, such as the global sea levels rising about 17 centimeters. As far as your last few sentences go, I actually do agree with what you're trying to say. A lot of people don't take the issue of global climate change very seriously, and I like that you mentioned how some people don't have a care in the world about this ongoing issue. Great post.
DeleteOur weather is never usually constant in our area. Don't believe me? Take a look at this past week alone. It was below freezing earlier this week at about 4 degrees. This weekend it's supposed to hit 57! The weather today is unbalanced and definately not predictable.
ReplyDeleteLet's face it: a majority of the people DO enjoy the warmer weather better. But the warm weather doesn't help our planet. With the Polar Ice Caps rapidly melting, we may just find ourselves underwater in the near future. On top of that, our pollution is also adding to our problems. The Greenhouse Effect is when the gases get trapped in Earth. Our pollution gets trapped in our atmosphere and harms our environment.
As an effort to protect our children and grandchildren, we should take action in eliminating any harmful things that may hurt the climate. Global Climate Change should not be taken lightly and should continue to be taught in order for people to understand how serious the topic is.
Hey kate I agree with your points, the weather is indeed going crazy and it's all global warmings fault. We must take action now before this impacts us in the future when it could possibly be worse.
DeleteKate i completely agree with your points. I am a person who likes the warmth but looking at your points I may reconsider... But still there are many dangers in the cold too. Also, the green house effect is a big problem... i agree with you. If our ozone layer is dissolved we will have nothing to protect us from the suns harmful rays. As it looks right now humans have a tough century ahead of them unless they can figure out a solution to this problem. Global warming is a big issue and scientist immediately need to figure something out. You made some really good points!! I agree with your side
DeleteI agree completely with your post. With polar ice caps melting it will cause too many problems. We as citizens of the Earth need to reduce pollution or as you mentioned future generations of our family members will be affected. Great Post!
DeleteKaitlyn, you did a great post! I have to say that comparing the topic at hand to our current weather predicament was a simple yet great idea that I had not even thought of. Your description of greenhouse gasses was well developed and your analogy about polar ice caps was quite humorous, yet a dangerous possible reality if we do not fix this impending disaster we call Global Warming. It is a serious matter that will not only effect Earth's future, but mankind's as well.
DeleteIn Snowshoe Pennsylvania, it reached -20 degrees F. IN Secaucus NJ it reached 2 degrees F. Our wind chills made it FEEL -5 Degrees F. The news likes to cause mass hysteria for ratings. It's always good to pay close attention to what is the REAL meaning behind the science of the weather.
DeleteGlobal warming aka "Climate Change" is a big reoccurring topic now a days especially when the weather gets colder like it is now. I believe that with so many problems the climate change poses to society and nature we should really act fast. We have the technology and the knowledge on the topic but yet we are too busy in other affairs to try and fix the problem. If they were to focus research on global warming itself maybe we could fix the problem before it causes havoc in the future. One of the greatest inventions of all time will be an alternate energy source that is eco friendly. Do you want to know why? It's because they want an energy that is efficient and won't contribute to this big climate change. So I think that if we focus on all this research now we can ultimately save us in the future. Now I'm going to talk about all the terrible things global warming does. To begin ice is melting worldwide, especially at the Earth’s poles. Save the Penguins!!! Another thing that global warming causes is holes in the o-zone layer, which is what really causing the heat to come in. So much is happening from global warming so in order to stop this we must dedicate research to it. This is my opinion on the climate change which has been impacting us as of late.
ReplyDeleteElijah! I agree with all of your points and opinions. In the majority, you focused on how we have such advanced technology and so many educated people that could help us figure out how to resolve the Global Climate Change. It is definitely affecting our planet in a negative way such as presenting the possibility of sea levels rising, like you stated. Holes in the ozone layer are another major cause of global warming, especially with all the harmful gases, such as carbon dioxide, that is being released into the air. I agree that we should be taking this a lot more seriously than we are at the moment, especially when we have the ability to fix this issue with all of the great technology and knowledge we have on this particular topic. We have to do it for the penguins!! Good Job.
DeleteElijah, I completely agree with your views on global climate change. We definitely need more research on climate because it will tremendously help in the future. Also, alternate energy sources that are Eco-friendly will help cut down on all the pollution. If we don't act fast the future of humanity will not be pretty. Great Post!
DeleteI too agree with you on the point that if we do not act fast enough, then there will not be enough time to solve the problem. However, I do disagree that we can fix the problem right now. Perhaps in the near future we will be able to, but for right now we can still take steps toward stopping or at least drastically reducing the speed of the problem. For if we do not fix the problem, we will indeed not be able to "Save the Penguins"!!!
DeleteElijah, I agree with most of your points. Also, when you stated "We have the technology and the knowledge on the topic but yet we are too busy in other affairs to try and fix the problem.", I couldn't agree more. I was actually really happy reading that because it disgusts me how much humankind has been engulfed in consumerism, and such things, that we forget what is important. Good job.
ReplyDeleteGlobal Climate Change is REAL and is currently affecting the whole planet. Consider the brutal weather we had to endure this week, it is a clear example of climate change. Rising sea levels are one of the the effects. As the climate changes and the Earth becomes warmer, more glaciers and polar ice caps will melt and disrupt our environment. According to NASA "Global sea level rose about 17 centimeters (6.7 inches) in the last century. The rate in the last decade, however, is nearly double that of the last century." So, who should be blamed for all of this climate change? US! We humans have burned too many fossil fuels, cut down massive amounts of trees and we keep hurting our atmosphere and environment. The pollution on Earth keeps getting worse and if we keep polluting like we are today there will be no Earth in the near future. We as humans have the responsibility to keep our Earth clean, and by cutting down on pollution we will see less effects of climate change.
ReplyDeleteI really liked your post because of the way it combined statistic with your general thoughts on the topic. The way you specifically dedicated a portion of your post to criticize humans was what I too did. Also, the mentioning of the sea wall was a good supporting piece of evidence as that eluded me in my thoughts of Climate Change. The overall fluidity of your post explained your opinion and your reasoning quite well. After all, we humans are certainly the biggest factor in this problem we call Global Climate Change.
DeleteWow, I first have to say that I wondered why such a blog topic was chosen, but after seeing everyone's posts and taking a look at information on the internet I now realize why. With this being such a controversial matter one would assume this topic was purely a matter of opinion. However this unique matter requires a specific culmination of reasoning AND belief. But getting back to my opinion on the blog, I believe that Climate Change is due in part to nature's periodical shift as well as man's incessant meddling with it. Though some scientists have argued that Climate Change has not occurred and is pure hokum, epa.gov directly states that "Earth's projected to rise another 2 to 11.5°F over the next hundred years. Small changes in the average temperature of the planet can translate to large and potentially dangerous shifts in climate and weather". Climate Change is definitely happening, however the real question is whether or not man is the biggest contributing factor to it. I would like to end the post with a simple answer to this question, yes. This is because of on simple reason, greenhouse gasses. They are necessary in keeping Earth's atmosphere warm by trapping energy. However, too much of it is potentially harmful for most organisms. So, in simple terms, Climate Change is happening, however man is influencing with Mother Nature's cycle and increasing the natural shifts in climate due toCO2 emissions, among other waste products that we pollute Earth with.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I may not fully agree with your stand-point, I do feel you have given enough supporting detail to make me question my opinion. And indeed, climate change IS happening, but is it something we should worry about? Or is it natural?
DeleteSince I was a child, I have grown up hearing Global Warming as a major epidemic. It was advertised everywhere, from Nickelodeon to Oprah Winfrey. I honestly have to say, I feel nobody knows the truth. When I was eight years old, the world was getting too hot, so scientists decided to name it Global Warming. When I was eleven years old, the temperature decreased drastically and iced over, and for that reason; so named it "Global Climate Change". In my honest opinion, I feel the only reason the name was changed, was so that they "educated" people would seem less "uneducated". This, from my other stand-point. could have been a political push by Al Gore, as he preached the ways of C02 and its destructive properties to our atmosphere. Honestly, I have noticed no difference in weather. Each year is as unpredictable as the last. Media's main idea is to cause mass hysteria with society.
