  2. Nelson Mandela was certainly a truly wonderful man and it was a tragedy that he died. He was a political leader and helped guide South Africa out of the extreme state it was in. Nelson Mandela spent 27 years as a political prisoner before becoming the first black president of South Africa. Mandela was a leading member of the African National Congress which opposed South Africa's white minority government and its policy of racial separation. The government banned the ANC in 1960 and Mandela was captured and jailed in 1962. He was convicted of treason and sentenced to life in prison. This gave the people hope as Mandela became a worldwide symbol of resistance to racism. South African President F.W. de Klerk finally lifted the ban on the ANC and released Mandela in 1990. Mandela helped dismantle the apartheid and form a new multi-racial democracy. Mandela was elected the country's president in 1994 and served until 1999. Basically he was the Gandhi of South Africa, bringing freedom to the oppressed races. The quote "I detest racialism, because I regard it as a barbaric thing, whether it comes from a black man or a white man." means that whether someone's black white brown whatever the case may be racism is unacceptable. No one has the right to put you down or make you feel bad just because you look different or come from a different background. There is no one that can say that you don't deserve to be here because nobody is perfect. These were some wise, and inspirational words spoken by a man who has witnessed racism his entire life. This is who Mandela was and what his famous quote meant.

    1. First, this blog wasn't about writing the history of Mr. Mandela. 2nd, copy and pasting information off the internet is NOT acceptable for these blogs.... remember your HONOR PLEDGE!

    2. I completely agree with you Elijah. Mandela was a well known person and deserved all the fame he got!!! Additionally, I like how you said that racism is unacceptable no matter what race. Also, I think racism is a childish idiotic act that makes me sad. Society is a disgrace for falling into things like that and using peoples' religion against them. How is it their fault how they were born or where they grew up?!?!?! MANDELA IS AN INSPIRATION TO ME AND HOPEFULLY TO ALL OF MAN KIND. His wise words might not stick with me in my head, but he encourages me to keep fighting. Mandela was a great man… RIP

    3. I must agree with both Abu and Elijah, Nelson Mandela sure did deserve all the fame he got. He was an excellent man who did so much for equality in South Africa and the world. Racism is a childish act that only brings strife and suffering to this world. Mandela was truly an intelligent man that was able to see past racism and form his own ideas and he stood for everything he believed. He was a remarkable man who will be missed.

    4. Elijah, thanks for including the background on Mandela. I learned a lot of things about him. Second, I think most of us agree, that racism of any kind is wrong. It disturbs peace. No one should be judged off of their appearance.

    5. Elijah, I liked the background information you included about Nelson Mandela. He was definitely an influential leader and it was surely a tragedy that he died. Plus, I agree with your statements on racism. No one should feel as if they're not as good as another person based on their race. Also, I really like that you compared Mandela to Gandhi by saying that "he was the Gandhi of South Africa".

  4. First off, I want to recognize Mr. Mandela as a great person who fought for peoples' rights and lived to abolish racism in all areas not just South Africa. If you are reading this blog I would honestly like you to take a moment of silence and give this great man some respect. Mandela thought he could save the Africans from racism and for this reason he said, "I detest racialism, because I regard it as a barbaric thing, whether it comes from a black man or a white man." To me, from this quote Mr. Mandela was trying to show why racism is an idiotic act that has gone out of hand. What is the point of racism? Why do people do things like this? I have gone through some forms of racism, probably not nearly as much as the people Mandela was trying to help, and it doesn't feel good. People do things such as that to kill self-esteem and Mandela was never let down, he kept fighting no matter how many threats he got or hate letters he got. Mandela found that what these elder men were doing was completely out of hand. What is the point of taking peoples' rights away because they are a different skin town than you? AGAIN, this is complete and utterly idiotic!!! I am completely against racism and don't think it is a "cool" thing. Society has changed because of men like Nelson Mandela and racism has decreased. Although it has only decreases it is very prevalent in todays society. I can't express my anger against these things in words and I hope everyone else feels the same. Mandela was an inspiration to the people and caused them to rebel, for that reason he was imprisoned. His imprisonment didn't stop him, he came back with even stronger beliefs and became the president of South Africa, when the government is overthrown. Mandela is represented in all aspects including sports. HE even made soccer a prevalent sport in the region. He is seen in pictures with many players of all different sports. MANDELA IS AN INSPIRATION TO ME AND HOPEFULLY TO ALL OF MAN KIND. His wise words might not stick with me in my head, but he encourages me to keep fighting. Mandela was a great man… RIP

    1. Abu, I can tell that Nelson Mandela was an inspiration to you and I as well do admire him very greatly. To think that one man had the heart of 20 and was able to keep fighting through all of the hardships he endured. I liked how you analyzed the quote as childish and idiotic because it is completely true. NO ONE SHOULD BE JUDGED BASED ON RELIGION, SKIN COLOR, etc. I wish the world had more people like him, because if there were would could maybe achieve peace

    2. Abu, I really liked how you connected Mandela's quote to your personal life. No one should every be a victim of racism. As you mentioned, it is childish and idiotic. We will continue to honor Mandela and his wise words.

    3. Abu, I completely agree with your opinion on racism being "completely and utterly idiotic". Of course, many people go through forms of racial discrimination, and it is certainly not a good thing to go through- and you really expressed that with your statement. I also like how you included the fact that Mandela is represented in several aspects, including sports such as soccer.

    4. Abu I do agree with you completely I believe that Nelson Mandela was a great man who was an influential person to millions of people. I believe that racism is a despicable thing the should have never have existed in the first place. I believe that society has adopted a very sad and a terrible thing that has only caused conflict between ethnicities and groups of people. One such example is KKK which was a horrible group that struck fear in hearts of many here in the USA. The KKK was formed due to racism towards black people. As you can see this ideology is terrible which has only caused problems.

    5. Abu, agreed with every part of your post. Nelson Mandela was without a doubt an inspirtation to all of us. As you stated, even though he was imprisoned for nearly three decades, this did not stop him. He went out of his way no matter what to fight for rights and create equality. I do feel the same way as you. Why should people be judged based on the color of their skin? It is morally incorrect and great leaders like Mandela himself were able to reshape society with their beliefs against racism.

    6. Abu, firstly I really think that your comment is well constructed and clearly displays great points, most importantly showcasing Mandela's influence. I agree with your point on racism not being considered "cool" and that it does have negative effects on people. I also have been a victim of racism, but thanks to Mandela's morals and ethics the world is becoming a better place overall. We need more people to have the same ideas as Nelson Mandela for the simple fact that his actions were legitimate and that racism needs to be completely eradicated from the face of this planet. Mr. Mandela was truly an inspirational man and I will definitely take his quotes to heart and cherish his legacy overall. RIP to a great man and intrepid hero.

    8. Abu, I agree with your whole post. Mandela is an inspiration to all of us. As you stated racism is utterly idiotic and no one should be discriminated because of their skin color. I really liked how you related this post to yourself and it really shows how much you admire Nelson Mandela. Mr. Mandela's beliefs and actions have taught me to never quit and stand up for what you believe in. Great post!

  5. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was not only a great and widely respected leader, but he was an honorable man who has brought upon on the Earth so many good ideologies and philosophical quotes that would change the future in a very positive manner. Here is just a little background on Nelson Mandela. He was born in July 18 in the year 1918 in the city of Mvezo in South Africa. He became a politician, anti-apartheid revolutionary, and a philanthropist. His role was like of that of the South African president. Going back to the topic at hand i too disagree with racism, and agree with his opinion of it. Racism is a disgusting thing that shows barbaric like behavior, which should not be used by the educated society we live in today. Most people believe that when a white man says something against black people that is racist which is true however it is equally as horrible as if a black man says that about a white men. Racism is equally horrific despite the person who's says it. It doesn't not matter of the persons skin color. I believe that racism and segregation are idiotic and just plain stupid and pointless, that are only used to give a person a sense of superiority. That is just sad that we as humans have fallen so low that we have to ridicule and insult other humans just so we can feel better about ourselves. That is just sad. Nelson Mandela was a great advocate of this whom I have come to respect so much and view as a role model. Mr.Mandela sure has had a very positive effect on the world and I wish that more people like him will grow up and fight for human equality.

    1. David, I agree with you 100% as Mandela was able to stop the racism going on inside of South Africa. He is a leader, and definitely should be respected for all the things he's done. I agree with the point you made about how it is sad we as humans have fallen so low to express racism and segregation but people still continue to do it. Anyone who commits acts of racism, should follow Mr. Mandela's lead because he died trying to rid the world of this hate.

    2. David, I agree with you that Nelson Mandela is not only a strong leader, but also an influential activist that put his life on the line just to make his country a better place. Your point that more people should be like Mr. Mandela is very spot on due to the fact that he was against racism and never quit on his beliefs. His moral values and ethics are very unique and are what mark him as a valiant hero. RIP Mr. Mandela.

    3. David I completely agree with your opinions in this argument. I like how you said that there should be more people like him, but if you actually think about it that is so unlikely. (I might have also said the same thing too) Mandela, had so many influences and created so many new ideologies it is unmatched. Mandela is a man that can't be described with words. I have respect for him and hopefully the whole world does too. I like the points you talked about, very solid.

    4. David, I like how you interpreted your opinions on Mandela. You were definitely correct on all the points you made about the honorable Mandela. Including a little history following your viewpoint on racism was perfect to include. Everyone should follow in his steps for fighting all they've got for something they feel strongly about like Nelson Mandela did.

    5. I agree with your feelings and liked that you included how he brought about many great ideologies and philosophical ideas. Moreover, it really made me ponder about what our society is truly like when you stated that we live in an educated society. Sure, we have many great advancements and the tools and keys for education and scientists, and the like are out there for us. But look what our world acts like on a daily basis. Are we really educated? We are taught many wise and important things but we don't use the knowledge we should obtain, in the real world. David, I can go on for years about this. But I know you and I both know...the world is a messed up place man. Think to the future, it's our job to fix it.

    6. Hey David, your brief description of Mandela was well done (and a good idea) because it gave me a better understanding of his personal life, something I had not thought too deeply about. Your description and opinion of racism were well founded because we humans have indeed fallen very low. However, there was one part of your post that did concern me and that was your not mentioning of the quote, or the lack of analysis for that matter. Other than that, you advocated your opinion quite eloquently, good post!

  6. Nelson Mandela is such a significant, influential figure, who was born on July 18, 1918, and died on December 5, 2013, at the age of 95. He was the former president of South Africa who served from 1994 to 1999. He is known as being a politician- and, more importantly, an activist who fought for equal rights among people of all races- no matter the cost. Mandela worked very hard to obtain peace and unity; however he has also been imprisoned for 27 years for his beliefs, which later led to him receiving several awards (including the Nobel Peace Prize).

“I detest racialism, because I regard it as a barbaric thing, whether it comes from a black man or a white man.” This quote stated by Nelson Mandela himself may be short, but it does have a significant meaning behind it. With this quote, first of all, Mandela is trying to interpret how much he strongly dislikes racism. This is because he believed that racism was an exceedingly cruel, inhumane thing. He believed that, no matter what race or nationality you are, racial discrimination is completely wrong and immoral. Nelson Mandela was mainly interested in people’s equality, and this quote represents his desire for fairness and equal opportunity among people of all races. And, in my opinion, I think that Nelson Mandela is completely correct in his beliefs. No matter what race a person may be, they most certainly do not have the right to discriminate others, based on something they have absolutely no control over. In no way should people feel dominant over others based on something as simple as their skin color.

    1. Paige, I like how you said, "In no way should people feel dominant over others based on something as simple as their skin color." This is absolutely true and it is what Nelson Mandela stood up for throughout his life. He had a strong hatred against racism and wanted equality for all, like you stated. He did not want segregation amongst people due to something they were naturally born with and have no control over. What is the point of that? Great post!

      Delete
    2. Paige, you are entirely right on your point that Mandela helped change the world for the better. Considering the fact that he was jailed for twenty seven years and still came out as an influential leader has left a profound impact on how I remember him. I agree with you when you said that racism isn't acceptable no matter what race or skin color you are due to the fact that racism has done so much harm throughout history and should be reviled. Nelson Mandela was a great man who never stopped fighting for his cause and that being said establishes him as a hero. RIP to Mr. Mandela!

    3. Paige, your entire post was right on point. When you stated, "No matter what race a person may be, they most certainly do not have the right to discriminate others, based on something they have absolutely no control over.", I couldn't agree with you anymore. We are who we are and to be made fun of for what we don't control, and/or believe in, is an inhumane thing that the worlds chooses to let happpen.

    4. I liked three points of this blog, besides the fact that I agree with your opinion. The first point is that you said he fought for equal rights no matter the cost. This is very true because he most likely knew that fighting racism would lead to big consequences, but he wanted to get his word out and spread it throughout the world. He did not care about himself, but he cared more for the world. He had a quality called selflessness. I also liked that you said we have no control over our skin color, what we look like, or basically anything we were born with. We have NO control over it and should not be penalized or punished for reasons I can't even think of. Lastly, that last sentence was very strong. Dominant was a great word to use for how others feel when discriminating specific people. It really hit me and had a good effect on the reader.

      Delete
    5. I agree 100% with your post. Your last sentence was really strong and was right on point. Why should others discriminate over something as simple as skin color? Racism is completely wrong and immoral. As you mentioned Mandela worked very hard to obtain peace, unity and racial equality at any cost. Mandela's actions reshaped South Africa and left a lasting impact on the world. Great post!

  8. Nelson Mandela, born 1918, was a brave, strong man that should continue to be remembered as the years pass. Unfortunately, we lost a hero on December 5th. Madela tried his hardest to stop racism in South Africa and was punished for his beliefs. This didn't stop him. He continued to fight for what was right and succeed.

This quote blantly states that Mandela hated racism. He was a firm believer that everyone should be treated equally. Racism is not exceptable in any country. People shouldn't be judged on their appearence or something we can't control.

I have one question for people for racially discriminate: Why?

Hopefully, we will try to accept each other and continue to live in peace. Always remember to remember Nelson Mandela!

    1. I agree with you in this argument, he was truly a very great man. Additionally, I don't think he will ever be forgotten, he is a hero that impacts the world even after his death. Also, i like how you said that Mandela hates racism. Although, hat is a strong word to use it is completely right in this situation. Honestly, what is the point of racism? Why do people take part in such problems? This is a psychological problem that people should keep away from. As I said before... MANDELA IS AN INSPIRATION TO ME AND HOPEFULLY TO ALL OF MAN KIND. His wise words might not stick with me in my head, but he encourages me to keep fighting. Mandela was a great man… RIP

    2. I 100% agree with you on tis argument. Although he passed away from us, but his spirit and belief stays. However, i don't think racialism is the problem can actually solved. It can only be improved instead. Mandela used his whole life to teach us that nothing can stop you if you firmly believe that you are doing the right thing. Mendala brings the world hope and love and like what Abu said above, he encourages everyone to keep fighting for the peace.

    3. Kaitlyn, I ask myself the same question about many topics, but this topic very much. Why do people want to and like to racially hurt and discriminate others? It doesn't make logical sense. Maybe we can have an intriguing, fun, and brainy discussion on racism and what we could do to stop it. We are the future and we should be doing things like this. A proposal of how to END racism. Why don't we literally ask racists why they do it. The next time you watch it occur, just say "why?" I would be interested to know what they say. R.I.P. Mandela. You are in our hearts.

    4. I agree with everything you said except for one thing, "continue to live in peace". I dont understand what you could possibly mean by this. By no means whatsoever is our world in peace. Just look at the middle east, it is a ticking time bomb ready to explode any second now. There's North Korea trying to develope nuclear weapons. And don't forget about Ukraine. We live in a messed up world, which is why we should, as you said, "try to accept each other".

    5. Kaitlyn, I agree with most of the points you made in your post. Mandela was definitely a brave man that will be remembered for his inspirational actions and beliefs. However, like Ian mentioned, when you said "...continue to live in peace." I immediately disagreed. Our world is in no aspect in peace at the moment, never really was, and nor do I think it ever will be. Going back to the blog we had in the beginning of the year, our world is in a position where there really is no possibility that society can let us live in peace, with the constant conflicts and different opinions like we discussed in class. Mandela did try his absolute best in preventing racism to continue, but all he could really do was decrease the chances at best, because it would be nearly impossible to obtain peace between people with different viewpoints. However, he was considered a great leader because of his actions and influences.

    6. I have one question for people for racially discriminate: Why? - the answer could be more complex than we think. Perhaps one reason is simply a one-sided thought process. Unfortunately, sometimes these one-sided people gain power and followers. However, someone like Nelson Mandela can turn the tides of social inequality. -Tom Hindle

    7. Hey Kaitlyn, I have to say that the concise message of this post made it well written. While others went on and on, your post simply stated the absolute truth. The absolute truth being that Mandela was great and the struggles he faced made his task of getting rid of apartheid all the more admirable. Lastly, the way in which you outlined the complete and utter stupidity of racism made your point quite reasonable and agreeable.

  9. Devoted supporter of peace and human rights, Nelson Mandela had recently passed away on December 5, 2013, living a long and successful 95 year life. Mandela was a member of the African National Congress in the 1940s where he led civil protests against the harsh regulations of the whites living in a segregated South Africa. Nelson also imprisoned for 27 years due to his actions and beliefs. He was finally released in 1990. In 1991, he was elected president of the African National Congress and then president of South Africa in 1994. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 as a result of his valiant acts contributing towards his country. Mandela led his country to democracy and never looked toward fighting fire with fire, in his case, racism with racism.
Nelson Mandela once said, “"I detest racialism, because I regard it as a barbaric thing, whether it comes from a black man or a white man." This quote serves as an inspiration towards me, my fellow classmates and countless others throughout the world. Mandela is elaborating his outlook and viewpoints toward racism. He is saying how he is against racism because it is an intolerant concept in general. He believes everything about it is unjust and discriminatory, no matter who displays these acts of racism. Mandela was for a world of equality and peace amongst one another. This quote itself describes his hatred towards biased and narrow-minded opinions towards people because of the color of their skin. He depicts the fact that it does not make a difference on who is being racist or committing these acts. The whole concept of judging someone by the color of their skin, race, ethnicity or religion is prejudiced and morally incorrect.

    2. I have to say I completely agree with you on all your points. You showed how peaceful Mandela was when you said "Mandela led his country to democracy and never looked toward fighting fire with fire, in his case, racism with racism." I agree with how you described the quote, and how skin color and religion is a dominating reason of racism. Also, I really liked how you switched up the quote "fighting fire with fire" with "racism with racism" because that was definitely a good way to describe his situation. His wise quotes and views are truly an inspiration and I agree that racism is unjust and completely immoral.

  10. Nelson Mandela was not only a leader to the people of South Africa, but he was indeed an inspirational man with highly regarded morals and ethics. His life as a South African activist and leader would not only showcase his gallant efforts to end apartheid in South Africa, but would also show his efforts to end racism all over the world. Mandela's main principles are bounded by one of his most famous quotes,"I detest racialism, because I regard it as a barbaric thing, whether it comes from a black man or a white man." This is a very interpretive quote that has distinct meanings o those who feel its impact. The quote basically is trying to show that racism ISN'T appropriate or acceptable whether what race, skin color, or religion you are. Even though racism is still prevalent in many countries around the world, Mr. Mandela did a great deal to get rid of a majority of it. Not only does this quote mean that racism isn't acceptable but it also means that racialism should be discredited and expelled entirely due to the fact that it isn't morally right. This quote broadcasts Nelson's main focus on stopping apartheid all over the world and establishing global peace. We can credit Mandela for having a profound impact on stopping racism by using peaceful action. He not only risked his life to help the people of Africa, but he was actually put in jail for more than twenty years. The fact that he came out of jail to eventually become the leader of South Africa is very inspirational and shows me that no matter how hard it is to fix a problem, there is still always a way. That being said, we can all see how powerful this quote's meaning is due to the fact that Mandela lived to stop the majority of racism in the world and encourage human rights. Therefore, we should take a moment of our lives and cherish this influential man for all he has done. RIP to a revolutionary, a leader, and most importantly a hero above all.

  11. Nelson Mandela was a legend; one of the world’s greatest heroes and leaders. He was an inspiration to the entire world for his courageous actions and wise views. He once stated “I detest racialism, because I regard it as a barbaric thing, whether it comes from a black man or white man.” Fundamentally, Mandela believed that racism was absolutely intolerable and plain wrong. He whole-heartedly opposed racism, whether it came from an African American man, or a white man. This was because he believed that just because someone was African American, and the victim of most racial slurs, it still wasn’t okay for them to be racist against any being. Racism is indeed a cruel and offensive thing that could affect every aspect of our lives in society today. We live in such a world where everyone is a different religion, and there are always going to be people who are against you for following different practices. Unfortunately, Mr. Mandela had been a victim of such situations, and lost nearly one third of his life to prison time because of the government of South America’s racist actions at the time of his life sentence. After twenty seven years in jail, Mandela was symbolized as a worldwide non-racial, peacemaking, political leader because of his truly inspirational motives and views.

What baffles me about the great Mr. Mandela is the way he so strongly and firmly believed in his opinions to have pushed through each and every harsh day in prison for twenty seven years. He never gave up hope to change the world and assist in inspiring people to take necessary actions to prevent racial offenses. He believed in peace and knew that something had to be done in order to stop such cruel wrongdoings from creating more controversy than it had in his case. After becoming the first black president of South Africa and making history, he worked ever so hard in his dreams of a non-racial nation and world. Tragically, Mr. Mandela left this world a few days ago, however, not without leaving a tremendous footprint of his astonishing motivation and overwhelming inspiration. Rest in Peace, great man.

From this point, i think 27 years in jail is too weak to break a man with faith. As what he said (humorously), in his country, man go to jail first, and then become president. Mendela is definitely a figure we should learn from.

    2. I believe he had one thought in his mind when he was released form prison... That thought would be something similar to this- "if I don't make a change, than who will?" -I feel if Nelson Mandela had a similar thought in his mind, this would be enough for him to persevere. -Thomas Hindle

  12. Nelson Mandela was an iconic figure who has inspired the world in many ways. Nelson Mandela organized an non-violent protest in South Africa against apartheid, was imprisoned for 27 years, and became South Africa's president in 1994, and remined in that postition until 1999. In the year of 1993, he won the Noble Peace Prize, he truly deserved it. Mr.Mandela was a political leader, but more importantly was an activist who inspired the world by peacefully requesting the end of racism and demanding equality for all. His actions and words have left a huge, inspirational imprint on the world, and sadly he passed away on December 05, 2013.

Nelson Mandela's inspiring quote "I detest racialism, because I regard it as a barbaric thing, whether it comes from a black man or a white man." speaks to the entire world. This quote firmly expresses the amount of dislike Nelson Mandela had for racism. The idea of racism is cruel and barbaric, and is something done by ignorant people who don't know any better. Nelson Mandela states the fact that no matter what ethnicity, race, or religion you are, racism is racism and that fact doesn't change. No matter how much racism you have to deal with, you don't have the right to be racist towards others. Racism is an inhumane action that hurts many. I have experienced racism and so has my family, and it hurts just like it would hurt anybody else. If you feel as if you are better than somebody else, doesn't mean you have the right to be racist, no matter what you are. Nelson Mandela fought, peacefully of course, for the end of racism, something this world has ignored to see. Mr.Mandela's positive acts and movements have inspired the world, shown that there are good people out there, and that if you want to make a change for the better, do it.

    1. God job Hava! I was completely inspired your the way you analyze the quote. I agree that "no matter how much racism you have to deal with, you don't have right to be racist towards others." This kind of tolerance is what we need in the world today.Mendela's faith makes him to fight and becomes one of the greatest people in the world.

    2. Hava, I totally agree with what Gemma said about the way you analyzed the quote. All your opinions towards the quote were on point. Everyone has different viewpoints towards every race or religion whether it be good or bad. Nobody has the right to criticize another religion in negative terms. Nelson Mandela is a great role model for his actions of fighting till the end for something he felt wasn't right in any way. He is definitely an inspiration to me and should be for everyone.

    3. I agree 100% with you. I also agree with what Gemma said on your statement, "no matter how much racism you have to deal with, you don't have right to be racist towards others." This is a good pairing with what Gandhi said, "eye for an eye makes the whole world blind". Two wrongs don't make a right. This is what people should live by in this world, but sadly that is no the case. The world should be more tolerant, but truthfully, the world is full of a bunch of idiots who don't know their right from their left.

    4. Hava, great post! I also mentioned in my post how racism is racism no matter who commits this act. You are certainly correct when you say that Nelson Mandela has inspired us to make a change for the better. I like how you said that, "No matter how much racism you have to deal with, you don't have the right to be racist towards others." This is true because even if someone is being racially discriminated by another, it is not correct for that person to be racist against the other. That is what Nelson Mandela did. He did not believe in attacking racism with racism.

  13. On December 5, 2013, Nelson Mendela, the black President of South Africa passed away from us. South Africans mourned the death of him, weeping, singing and gathering near his homes and other landmarks linked to him nationwide. In Soweto township, where Mandela lived before he was imprisoned for 27 years, giant posters of his face adorned streets. On the grass near Mandela's home in the Johannesburg suburb of Houghton, children spelled out with rocks "We love you Mandela." Why Mendela is such a great leader who is beloved by so many people? However, Nelson Mendela is not only a South Africa's antiapartheid icon but also a man speak for peace; "heroes emerge in troubled times", just as the other icons in any other periods of tme in history (such as Martin Luther King, and Mahatma Gandhi) , Mendela is like sunshine which light up millions of people's souls. He is a symbol of hope for people who under the racial discrimination and live in unequal soceities. Mendela's actions and words inspired so many people, not only the one who is suffering from inequity, but also to the people who is not. "It always seems impossible until its done." Mendela's sincere and persistent efforts touched the world and led more and more people to join to construct a comprehensive, equitable, and lasting peace.

"I detest racialism, because I regard it as a barbaric thing, whether it comes from a black man or a white man." This quote said by Nelson Mendela firmly expressed his abomination toward racialism. He regarded racialism as bararic thing. What we can learn from the quote is that the peace world he dreamed to reach is not only fair to balck people, but instead, all the people in the wolrd can be treated equally. Mendela is truly a figure i adore and even want to become in the future. To completely solve the problem of racialism is almost impossible because the racial discrimination is a deep-rooted socail problem. Even so, Mendela still used his whole life to make an great effort on it and ever gave up no matter how hard and unrealistic it is . His actions showed everyone in the world that how indestructible a human can become if he has true faith. Mendela passed away from us, but his faith stays. If human is created by God, then Nelson Mendela is undoubtedly one of the greatest masterpieces God has made.

    1. "To completely solve the problem of racialism is almost impossible because the racial discrimination is a deep-rooted social problem." Although you typed this, Nelson Mandela would stand up to this task, and fight-the-good-fight, because he was a man who had no fear to corrupt society. Also, I agree with your conclusion, Nelson Mandela truly is one-of-a-kind. -Thomas Hindle

    2. Gemma, where do I begin? I completely agreed with most of your points and well written post. To know that young children idolized him before he was imprisoned for all those years, is truly saddening. I liked how you mentioned that Mandela's wise words not only inspired people who were victims of racial offenses, but to everyone and anyone. However, just a slight indication, I know you said "led more people" but at the end, I wouldn't choose lasting as a way to describe peace, because as I mentioned in Kaitlyn's post, peace is nearly impossible to achieve in this world. Other than that, I really loved the ending where you stated, "If human is created by God, then Nelson Mandela is undoubtedly one of the greatest masterpieces God has made." The construction of that sentence was perfect, because Nelson was an extraordinary and godlike being. My mom always tells me that people like Mandela may be God in the form of a human, or his reincarnation, but that's a whole different topic!

  14. Nelson Mandela... what comes to your mind when you hear this name? Well for me it's a multitude of things, including intelligence, wisdom, and things of the sort. Now, I'm sure all of you know that lots of people know of the man, but do not have a vast or even somewhat substantial knowledge about his acts and way of life. Nelson, as they liked to call him, did not necessarily have a good life to start out, as his father died at the age of 12 and he was struggling for freedom. An interesting fact about Mandela is that he actually was kicked out of college because of contributing to a student protest. The interesting part is that this is like him as he is a man who stands up for what he believes in. However, let's analyze a specific quote he stated. This quote is: "I detest racialism, because I regard it as a barbaric thing, whether it comes from a black man or a white man." Racism is something that is very hazardous in today's world, for many reasons, and literally makes no sense if you really think about it. He is saying that he is strongly against racism as he recognizes it as something that could be very detrimental and lead to violence, crime, wars, and so on. Many people back in the 19th and 20th century essentially, looked at racism from only one side, and that side is the color of their skin. So, many white men believed it was profoundly unfair for the black community to discriminate the whites because many whites believed they were far more superior than the blacks, and it would just be silly for a black man to cross his path in such a way. Blacks and other minorities felt it was unfair for certain plausible reasons as well. These could be that due to the extreme slavery they are/have been through, it is unfair to mistreat them even further. BUT, MY MAIN POINT is that he was saying it doesn't matter if you're black, white, green, or violet, you do not have the right and are being an overall bad person, lacking morality and acting off of evil opinions or just to seem "cool". For these reasons, Mandela detects radicalism and in an intelligible manner. This shows pure wisdom and his quote is very deep and makes you feel a sense of "good" inside. Nelson Mandela, we, people of the world, thank you for taking a stand and being a leader.

  15. He is arguably one the greatest men of all time. He is most famous for being a civil rights activist in South Africa. He is an inspiration to many and made things right. He is Nelson Mandela. As we know, he passed this week, R.I.P. He once said "I detest racialism, because I regard it as a barbaric thing, whether it comes from a black man or a white man." I happen to without a doubt 100% agree with this quote. This is what his whole work was based on and even that of MLK Jr. Racism is a barbaric thing. What makes people think they are better than someone else just by the color of their skin. It does not matter if you black or white, European or African, or tall or even short, everyone is created equal. No one can say they are better than someone else because of what they look like. This also has to do with discrimination towards religions as well. Almost all religions and religious groups have been discriminated against at one point or another, Judaism during the Holocaust, the Puritans back in the 15 and 16 hundreds, and even today people create stereotypes about people of the Islamic religion. People's opinions of you should be by your character and actions not by appearance or beliefs.

Nelson Mandela is truly an influential figure in history. He stood what was right and would not take no for an answer. The best part about it is that he did not use violence similar to Gandhi. He proved that you can get what you want by taking a stand and not letting go by undetected. It is the way people should live their lives. So, Nelson Mandela left his footprint on the world in a huge way, but no he has passed. It is now our turn to lead the way and to not let his work go to waste. R.I.P. Nelson Mandela, you will be missed and remembered by many.

  16. To begin, this is definitely one type of blog post I looked forward to doing. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela… where do I begin? He was a Negro man born on July 18th, 1918 who distributed positivity all over the world. Perfect words to describe him in my opinion would be fighter or dedicator. What exactly did he do? His ultimate achievement was the granting of freedom to South Africans. He also participated to rid South Africa of apartheid and segregation. He additionally led South Africa to a route of recovery. Even after Mandela’s arduous and tough times from being sentenced to jail for 27 years, he pulls through and continues to aim for his goal of ending racial segregation and helping global poverty. Nelson Mandela was deserving of his award of the Noble Peace Prize and election as president. Unfortunately, after his respected and honorable life, Nelson Mandela passed away on December 5th 2013.
“I detest racialism, because I regard it as a barbaric thing, whether it comes from a black man or white man.” This quote stated by Nelson Mandela has a significant and inspirational meaning behind the big words. It elaborates on his perspective of how he feels towards racism. He had strong beliefs in the wrongs of racial discrimination. I 100% agree with his iconic opinion of racism and how it is depraved, decadent, and dissolute. Mandela deemed in equality for all and this specific quote represents his desire in justice for ALL races and religions. I have witnessed many religions be discriminated whether it be from stereotypes or factual input. No matter what, judging someone based on biased opinions is ethically incorrect. This prejudice and inequity only expands and great leaders such as Nelson Mandela fight for the right. Nelson Mandela will forever be in our hearts and appreciated for the massive extents he went to provide benefits for the world.

  17. Nelson Mandela is truly a hero in our society. He went through so much hardship to leave a lasting impact on our world. He was an intrepid man who worked tirelessly to change our world and was not scared of anything. Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 in the village Mvezo, Umatu, a providence of South Africa. The quote "I detest racialism, because I regard it as a barbaric thing, whether it comes from a black man or a white man," says a lot about Mandela's beliefs on racism. Just like Mandela I believe racism is a cruel and idiotic act. Mandela is trying to say no matter what race, ethnicity, skin color, or religion you are no one should be treated differently because it is barbaric. To spread his message Mandela sparked peaceful protests, which made him end up in jail for 27 years. After he was released from prison Mandela did not quit to bring racial equality in South Africa. Mandela's attitude to never stop inspires me to never quit, even when people are discouraging you. Racism is pointless and makes people think they are superior over others just because of someone's skin color or beliefs. In the educated society we live in today many of us know that racism is morally wrong and is never the right thing to do. Many people admired Mandela and that is why he ends up being the first black president of South Africa. Nelson Mandela is one of the greatest people to have lived and many of us are thankful for the change he created in our world. Mr. Mandela to me is a role model and hero whose legacy will always be remembered.

    1. Hey Akshay, firstly I have to say that describing Mandela as a hero was simple yet ingenuous idea because in my blog post, I only described him as a great man. I'd also like to mention that I felt you're statement about Mandela being fearless a bit off. In my opinion, Mandela's fear was that apartheid would continue even with his activism. HOWEVER, he was able to surpass this fear with handwork, belief, and passion. Overall though this was a good post, you well described Mandela, his belief, and his legacy.

  18. Thousands of world leaders, family, and followers, mourned on Tuesday to honor the great life of Nelson Mandela. Throughout his life, he has revolutionized the way South Africa's society works. He created the African National Congress Party, which is the party that eventually made him president. He was the first democratically chosen president in South Africa, and this is all thanks to a non-violent resistance campaign against the colonial government. Sadly, not until 1993 was he recognized for a Nobel Prize. Although, he may not be with us today... His influence remains a part of our history.
“I detest racialism, because I regard it as a barbaric thing, whether it comes from a black man or white man.” This quote makes an important statement. Racism, is "barbaric". Barbaric is the same meaning towards Slavery, children-selling, Human-Sacrifice, Public Execution, cruel and unusual punishments, and the list goes on, and on. Unfortunately, Mandela was placed in prison foe 27 years for trying to spread the word of this "barbaric-society" and it's flaws. Even when he gets out of prison, he does not give up on his opinion. This begins to spark a change. "I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear." -Nelson Mandela. This quote sheds light on his actions. Even though he was placed in prison for nearly 30 years, he heroically stood up for what was right. He will forever remain within our hearts, and his teachings will never be forgotten. R.I.P. Nelson Mandela. -Thomas Hindle

  19. Before I can even begin to analyze Mr.Nelson's quote, I feel it is ever necessary to mention what kind if a man he was. Nelson Mandela was a visionary who (during his time alive and even recent his death) touched the hearts of so many with his leadership against the apartheid system in Africa. The fact that a simple man (with an incomplete college education) could change the fate of an entire nation while simultaneously bringing attention to a matter dear to him, shows just how far-reaching Mandela was. In fact, I like to think he was the Gandhi for Africa, as both men did great things that not only helped them, but scores of other people as well. However getting back to the blog topic at hand, I analyze Mandela's quote ("I detest racialism, because I regard it as a barbaric thing, whether it comes from a black man or a white man") in the following manner. Since Mandela realized people were so divided on the concept of racialism, his quote simply stated that, regardless of your skin color, racialism was a notion that only the basic cave people of olden times could've rationalized.
