Blast off to Mars!!

Ok, I know that the title of this blog may sound strange (yes, I would also agree), but let me explain.  This week, we are going to pretend that all of us have volunteered to be the first people to colonize the planet Mars.  Water has been found and scientist have been cultivating the planet so that it can sustain life.  The reality is that you're a long way from home....a really long way....(it would make the separation from say the historical "Old World" and "New World" look like a simple walk across the street!!).

So, as you prepare for your trip to the Red Planet, we have to decide on a few things....

This Week's Blog Questions:

You can carry only three things with you (due to strict weight limitations)... what would you take?
Think about the make up of your class.  Someone has to be in charge...who?  What type of government are you going to put into place?  What are some of the rules that you would establish that would be non-negotiable?  What do you do with those that refuse to obey the rules?

PS> Even though this is somewhat of a "fun" blog topic this week, the answers to the above questions aren't as easy to answer as one may think.  The decisions that you make will have MAJOR implications and may determine if you survive or not!  Give your responses some thought.

  1. If I had the choice to colonize Mars I would bring three essential items. The first item is a spacesuit because spacesuits keep your body fluids from boiling(believe it or not), provide an oxygen atmosphere for breathing, and help with temperature control. The second item I would bring would be solar arrays because I would need a device that can make power for long periods of time (provide main source of power for colony). The third item I would bring would definitely be medicine to help prevent diseases, cure illnesses, and provide enough nutrients so the individual can survive.
If someone had to be in charge of the planet, it would probably be an expert scientist who knows everything about survival and cultivation. This would be my logical choice because in charge there must be a leader who reassures that their people are safe and that he knows what he is doing (wise). The type of government is a democracy because it gives everyone an open opinion and improve how decisions will be made. "We the people" is a small line that briefly describes that everyone will help the planet run better, not just the single president (in this case the expert scientist). In the established democracy all citizens will participate equally and be treated equally. Some of the rules I would establish would be:
Any rule that is not followed by an individual will prompt him/her to exile from planet
1)There will be no toleration of inappropriate or disrespectful behavior
2)Everyone should take part in daily activities or chores
    3)No violence at all
4)No firearms or types of weaponry allowed
5)Mind your own business and do not vandalize anyone's property
Anyone who refuses to obey the rules will be given a warning for their first offense. If this person disobeys the rules another time, they will be exiled from the planet. Therefore, in order to colonize a planet you must have a strict set of rules that the people will agree to and abide by. With all these established reasons, Mars would be suitable for the survival of humans.

    1. What about food? You are going to go without food? BUt your other choices are good

      Delete
    2. I don’t think you need to have electrical energy on the planet because we can live without it. We are not going on the planet of Mars to play games or work on computers, not yet. We are trying to first create a stable environment than we can have all of this fun.

      Delete
    3. Abu, it is specified in the information Mr.Gehm gave us that scientists are already cultivating the planet to sustain life. This most nearly means that there could already be a present source of food in which you do not need to bring. However, I do see that you made a strong point on the electrical energy but this energy is useful ahead of the twenty-first century box. Planing ahead is always key.

    4. And also I don't think you would need a space suit because he said, "Water has been found and scientist have been cultivating the planet so that it can sustain life." I made the same misjudgment but I wanted to point that out.

    5. Nader, I mostly agree with you. I didn't agree with your choosen items, but with your government, I fully agree. These rules are simple, yet needed. All the rules are extremely fair and the consquences go along quite well.
As for the items, Mr. Gehm mentioned that Mars could 'sustain life'. There is no need for a space suit in this case, then. Medicine and solar arrays were a good choice. I actually didn't think of solar arrays, glad you brought it up!

      Delete
    6. Abu, i think it would be necessary for Nader to bring solar arrays along. We want to try to make people feel at home and more comfortable in the new planet. And Earth is sure overran by technology. We would want to try and make this planet as normal as possible.

      Delete
    7. Nader I partially agree with your choices, something I wouldn't bring is a spacesuit since it said that Mars was made inhabitable. But with everything else I agree with. I too put an expert scientist who knew what he was doing because I wouldn't be comfortable putting my life in someone who didn't even know what was going on. A democracy to me is the best type of government since it give the people a chance to give their options and have them matter. This keeps them Happy and avoids future revolts that would only bring more negative than positive. Your rules and consequences are impeccable and i agree with you completely. Well done my friend

    8. I feel spacesuits are unnecessary, and I also feel the "Mind-Your-Own-Business" Law, sounds a bit broad. Perhaps, it could be "Privacy of the Person" Law instead. Otherwise, I fully agree with your laws and necessities. -Tom Hindle

      Delete
    9. Nader, I felt that you had a great post overall but I disagreed with a few things.. In my opinion a spacesuit is unreasonable in this aspect but medicine is highly needed. I also put in my post an expertise in science for the ruler. I disagree with your 4th rule because weapons would be needed for protection but only to an extent. And for the 5th rule, people should be allowed to express their opinions with others statements but maturely. Other than that, I agree with majority of your post.

      Delete
    10. I would have to disagree about bringing spacesuits because if Mars is already habitable, why would we need spacesuits? I definitely agree that a democracy is needed to establish a thriving colony and population. I agree with your laws, but I would not give a warning to people if they broke the law and immediately exile them because negative behavior is not tolerated.

      Delete
    11. Like Akshay I'd disagree with the spacesuits for the same reason, but your idea of including medicine was simple, yet genius. After all it is a necessity that so many overlook (such as myself). I liked that you included solar panels just as I did, because you thought about utilizing something that was already on Mars and that would have a major positive impact for the inhabitants that lived there. Great ideas!

      Delete
    12. Nader, i agree with you on some of your points. However, you would not need a spacesuit or oxygen atmosphere for breathing because according to Mr. Gehm life can be sustainable there. But it would be good for protection. I also like how you included solar arrays because i not only didn't think of that but i didnt know what they were!

  2. If I could carry any three things to mars I bring cattle, clothes and something that would allow me to communicate back to the Earth. If I bring cattle I could try to start a civilization with animals. Also, the animal would serve as a good source of cross breeding just incase you could find animals in Mars. Not only will the cattle serve as a scientific food, it will serves a last minute source of food, incase everything goes wrong. I would bring clothes to keep myself covered and clean. I don’t want to be naked in the atmosphere of space unless I’m changing. I am shameful of nakedness and we are taught that since we were young children. Also, it is important to bring extra clothes because many sicknesses and diseases are passed through wearing the same clothes. If a sickness begins in Mars, the whole civilization we started there could quickly be ended. I would bring something to communicate back to the world so I would know how everything is going and talk to my family. Additionally, I want to tell people about my findings. I need to be connected back with my old world. I am not saying that I want to bring my cell phone because those won’t work. I doubt there will be any connection there.
As a first leader I would want someone who knows what he’s doing, knows about science, and can bring the civilization through the toughest of times. I would want a leader like this because there are going to be many difficult situations when we are in Mars and we will need someone to bring us through the tough times. Additionally, I am hoping that the leader would be somewhat militarily minded, just incase we have an inner conflict or if we have “aliens” attack us. I would also want to make the leader a person who makes everyone follow the rules. If someone breaks the law I want the leader to punish the person. We cant let people go and do whatever they want or we will be considered uncivilized. I don’t want our new civilization to make the same mistakes we have made so far. Also, the type of government I would have is a democracy, so everyone can put in their word on what they want to happen. We need to make this new civilization work and we have found that past civilizations have had some troubles using monarchy. Again, I don’t want to make the same mistakes that we have made in our past civilizations. The laws I would inaugurate would be:
    1. You have your own rights until you interfere with somebody else’s (Declaration of Independence mostly)
    2. Alcohol will not be permitted. The use of alcohol could be the downfall in the country. No country should have drunk people roaming through their land; the situation will only end negatively. The only time alcohol should be used is during medical situations.
    3. No violence is allowed. The only time you could have violence is when you are involved in a war.
The people who first refuse to follow the law will get put on probation and given a warning, but if they continue to break the law they will be put in a jail that should be built there. If people continue to break the law after this they will be sent back to the Earth. Also, they might start getting less food so they know that their only choice is to stop. If we have to take these measures in our new civilizations we will. We won’t let one person break our civilization.

    1. I see how you are trying to say that cattle should be brought over because of a food source. But why would you want to bring in animals that won't survive? You have to realize that the environment isn't stable at all and the cattle would die. If food is already being cultivated by scientists you wouldn't need another food source (think about it, you can only take three things). Also in your information I see that you included that dirty clothes will ultimately lead to sickness, but clothes aren't the only thing that do. How will the planet even deal with illnesses in the first place if there is no medicine? However, your rules and government are definitely a good choice.

      Delete
    2. I agree with Nader. How do you know the cattle would be able to survive? Is the environment stable and capatable? How would you wash your clothing? These items are necessities, but they could also hurt you during your time on Mars. (Good job on the government choice, though!)

      Delete
    3. Abu your thought process about bring cattle was well placed but there is one big problem besides the fact that the animals wont survive on the surface of Mars. That is, cattle weigh a lot and you would need about 20 cattle to do what you are planning to do. That would cause problems when transporting them onto the planet. Also what are they supposed to eat. But your other ideas were good, but you forgot to mention medicine for disease and dangerous bacteria. Without it people would die and will not allow you to colonize Mars. I do agree clothes would be needed since Mar's temperature is about 60 degrees, but i believe there are other more important things to bring. I agree with your type of government and rules though.

    4. Ok you guys are COMPLETELY wrong and aren't reading the blog. HE CLEARLY says, "Water has been found and scientist have been cultivating the planet so that it can sustain life." David he said that you could pick ANY 3 because of weight, not pick 3 things that have low weight... So that statement is also incorrect. If you have no clothes medicine won't help you bud... So I think all the statements you made are incorrect. and Kaitlyn if it says that scientists have made life stable, to me that means all things needed to live are there including water. Also, Nader what if the food source runs out. I didn't say the cattle was for food. The cattle was for LAST resort if everything failed. I don't think you read my whole blog so I disagree with the statements all of you made.

    5. Abu made a great point... It makes me question.. Is there really a combination of 3 items that are necessary for survival on Mars? Now I am rethinking my own blog post... -Tom Hindle

      Delete
    6. If Mars can sustain life, then there will be new organisms exist can replaced the cattle.. Besides, I am so confuse why the alcohol is not permitted. I think people should live free and happy. The thing you need to care about is not whether the people get drunk or not but what "crime" did they do after getting drunk...

  3. If I could bring three items to Mars, they would be a radio to communicate with Earth, medicine, and lastly, a dune buggy.
I would need a radio to communicate with the scientists working on Earth. They could clue me in on the futuristic theories about this alien planet. I would take medicine so prevent and cure illnesses that I may catch from the red planet. I would need a dune buggy to easily manuever around Mars. Mars' land is rough, unstable, and rocky. A dune buggy can help me travel and can withstand the rough terrain.
Our leader should possess courage, kindness, and creativity. He or she should have the ability to keep the democratic civilization stablized and under control. At first, the planet will be chaotic. People will be confused and curious of their surroundings. Our leader should be able to lead the people in the right direction.
Rules are necessary in order to keep the civilization under control. Some would be:
    1. Respect: Respect your neighbors and your peers
    2. No stealing: This can protect one's property
    3. No smoking: This is necessary to protect the environment
    4. Military: Men and women above the age of eighteen should be trained in case of forgien attack.
For those of the people who refuse to follow the laws, they shall be removed from the planet. At the first offense, they will have a warning. The second offense will result in them heading back to planet Earth.
If everyone would follow the laws, Mars would be suitable for all its residents.

    1. Kaitlyn I believe two of your three things are very important. I do not believe that a dune buggy is a necessity. ALthough it would help mobility that really isn't an issue here. You need to make sure your colony is able to survive on its own before you can worry about exploring the planet. I agree with your other points though. Especially your rules I believe they were very well though out and effective. The type of Leader you would establish also caught my eye. I believe you did a very good job.

      Delete
    2. I agree with David, a Dune Buggy is a luxury more than a necessity. However, I really like how you included a radio. If it worked, we wouldn't feel as far from home if we heard what was on-going. And also, a military.. How would we fight on a Barron planet? And would a military be needed the instant we go to a new planet? There would be no territories to fight for, and no organization big enough to mess with. Otherwise, I feel your points were spot-on. - Tom Hindle

      Delete
    3. Kate, I agree with you on the radio because forms of communication is vital. Also, a leader should definitely portray the characteristics you listed. Without a leader who is under control, the planet would only result in chaos. I believe that everyone should deserve second chances so I also agree with what would happen to those who disobey rules. Good post.

      Delete
    4. Where would you get fuel for the buggy?

      Delete
    5. I agree with David that a dune buggy is not a necessity and more of a luxury because you could survive without. I agree with your other two choices, medicine and a radio. Medicine is key to stopping diseases before they spread and a radio can help us communicate with people on Earth.

      Delete
    6. Abu brought up another good point... with all of these items we plan on bringing... how will we run them? Like in my post, for example, I stated I would bring a refrigerator... But what energy would it run on? Shivani also brought up this point. -Tom Hindle

      Delete
    7. Kate, nice post. I do, however, have some disagreement towards your opinions. A dune buggy or any sort of transportation would be a great advancement for planet Mars, but after it starts to become habitable. As Mars becomes much more industrialized, it would then be appropriate to have types of transportation. Therefore, I disagree with how you listed a dune buggy as one of your items to bring on Mars.

      Delete
    8. I would have to agree with Abu and Thomas on this one because dune buggies are irrelevant to survival on a planet. It is more of a luxury item and the cost of making these and their weight contribute to this factor.

      Delete
  4. If I were allowed to bring three items with me, when I took off for Mars I would bring the following. The first item I would bring with me is books. The reason being that it allows me to continue to expand the knowledge for the present and future inhabitants of Mars. Knowledge is power and this could open our doors so we can start building colonies and eventually large cities. The second item I would bring with me to Mars would be a type of portable energy source. It would be a panel with solar cells capable of capturing large quantities of solar radiation from the sun and convert it to electricity so the colony would be able to expand and grow. Energy is a very important thing to have and it is a necessity for the colonization of an unknown planet. The third item I would bring with me would be medicine. Bacteria on Mars are alien to us and we do not know if they are dangerous or not. It is always better to be well prepared than not prepared at all. Lets say the bacteria and other life forms are deadly to humans than everybody would die and we would not be able to colonize Mars.
If someone had to be in charge I would chose a scientist who is an expert on Mars and how to survive on the red planet. This is the most logical decision since we are entrusting our lives to someone I want that person to know what they are doing and not get us killed. The type of government I would set up on Mars would be a democracy. I believe that the people should have the power and have a say in what goes on in the new colony.
The rules I would establish are the following:
    1) Respect EVERYONE
    2) No killing
    3) No stealing
    4) Everyone must attend school until they are 25
    5) No violence and vulgar language
Anyone who does not follow these rules would result in exile. There are no exceptions. With all of this I believe that humans will be able to survive and thrive in Mars and eventually expand and build great cities, just like on Earth but better.

    1. Everything in your top paragraph, I agree with fully. However, I find some flaws with your second paragraph. "Everyone must attend school until they are 25". Will there be any jobs on Mars? Especially if we are pioneers. Also, if we were exiled... where would we go? It's a one-ticket trip.. we would have no-where else to go. -Tom Hindle

    2. OK... BOOKS???? You think books would be important? David are you going to Mars to discover and colonize or be comfortable and find a good place to read?? I think that the people that made life stable are obviously knowledgeable, but you can DEFINITELY survive without books. Also, this statement is wrong: "Energy is a very important thing to have and it is a necessity for the colonization of an unknown planet." How do you think our ancestors fought and colonized... Using technology? NO NO NO. Also on my blog you said, "I do agree clothes would be needed since Mar's temperature is about 60 degrees, but i believe there are other more important things to bring." So you think books are more important than cloths?

      Delete
    3. I would have to agree with Abu. Why would you waste one of your choices on books when you could take something that would help you colonize and survive. I agree that we should establish a democracy as a form of government and the laws you presented are great, except I disagree that people must attend school until they are 25. I think that 25 is to high of an age to be in school and should be lowered to either 17 or 18.

      Delete
    4. However, I think David's point is reasonable...If you are going to Mars, you really need to bring things more than just clothes to keep your warm. (I think you will supposed to wear space suit instead haha) Books and Maps and things like these are really important in my opinion, because they do help organizing the planets!

      Delete
    5. I would have to disagree with both of you guys (Abu and Akshay) and say that David is making a good point here. We cant just come to mars clueless because if e do then we could start bio terrorism and possibly destroy the planet. We came her for a political purpose and an educational one. Also quoting from what Gemma said on the bible and how it soothes people and gives them faith. Basically its anyone's opinion but books are a powerful thing and it could benefit us on mars.

      Delete
    6. Abu and Akshay, I do not think you understand what David is trying to say. I agree with him on his point of bringing books to Mars, considering that was also one of the items on my list. Bringing boks allows you to expand upon your knowledge while creating a habitable planet from scratch. You need a basis to start from. Books would be a great source of knowledge and source of expansion throughout the planet.

      Delete
    7. Abu, books would be MAJORLY important on Mars because they would be the only record of knowledge that the planet would contain, throughout history books have been in important in remembering and passing on facts, stories, and ideas (however I do agree that clothes are more important than books but I don't agree with thrashing the keepers of knowledge). Also, technology WOULD BE essential. Technology was used during the exploration age, just in a different form then you'd normally think (Ex: Astrolabe) Besides, even if they did not count as technology, with the age we are living in now, how many people could truly go without technology FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES!

  5. Wow~ A trip to Mars! That sounds intense! It would be a shame if I could only bring 3 things though... However, after a long analysis of process-of-elimination, I have narrowed it down to just 3. The first item I would bring, is my refrigerator. Why a refrigerator? It keeps my food cold, and keeps it from spoiling! Handy for storage, and a necessity in current society. The second item I would bring, would be my Camera/Photo Album. I still want to preserve my memories from Earth, therefore I would have all my photos saved to an SD card. Also, along with the SD card, would be a camera! Who wouldn't want to take pictures on a new planet? My third, and final item... would be Seeds. "Why seeds..? There's no oxygen!" Well, who is to say we humans, won't make the planet more "habitable" than it all ready is? What if, we find water on Mars? What if, we can find fertile soil? We could start farming on a different planet! (Given the conditions are healthy enough for the plants to grow) - I feel it is worth the effort. Now, who would be the Leader? Well, we obviously need someone who is strong, courteous, and intelligent. Honestly, I am unsure at the moment who would be a "great leader". My best choice, for now, would be a well-informed scientist/engineer. As for our government... Why not a Democracy? It works well here in America. So why not on Mars? Same rules apply, vandalism, murder, rape, robbery, etc... all would be considered illegal acts. I feel we would be able to survive with these laws, and materials, because we would co-exist with each other. Even if, it is on the Red Planet. -Tom Hindle

    2. Tom, I disagreed with some parts of your post. A refrigerator, in my opinion would be unreasonable because of the unsupplied energy source and food needed to be kept cold. Also, I liked your idea of bringing seeds but you mentioned "What IF there was water on Mars?" but Mr.Gehm had already said Water had been found by scientist. I agreed with your description of the leader and similarly included a scientist. I also agree with your rules and government but you forgot to include what happens if someone disobeys the rules. Other than that, good format for your post!

    3. Actually, I think your entry is interesting..but I think in the period we are able to live in Mars, we will no longer need the refrigerator! I think bring a camera is a good idea. ( if there is a Wifi connected with earth that will be even better!) I think Democracy can't reach by one day since this is a new world. ( imagine if you force a 6-month-old baby to understand the theory of relativity ). But over all, it is a good post!

    4. To Shivani: You're right, I should have read the blog more carefully. And to finish up my post; If someone disobeys the rules, it will depend on what the offence was. For example, I feel "if you were to steal a chocolate bar, you should pay the fee of the cost (double) of the original amount" This pertains to something of a larger amount as well such as "A television that costs $1,000; you must pay $2000." If the fee is not payed, you will spend time in Jail. However, for more serious crimes such as murder, you will be locked up in Prison, or possible Death Penalty. -Tom Hindle

    5. Yes, Tom, it really would be a shame to only be able to bring three items with you to Mars. However, I liked some of your ideas. Bringing seeds would help us discover the way organisms grow on Mars. Oh, and I liked that you mentioned that you would bring a camera/SD card. I thought that that was a very good idea, and being that I love photography so much, I'm surprised I never thought of it. Unfortunately, I didn't like your idea about the refrigerator..there wouldn't really be any sources of energy to help keep it running. Other than that, your blog post was pretty good.

    7. Tom, I have to FULLY disagree that a democracy would work well on Mars. First of all the same rules MOST CERTAINLY do not apply to Earth and Mars. They are (metaphorically speaking) two different sports entirely. While Earth's rules focus on ethics, morality, and fairness, Mars's rules would be about SURVIVAL. After all, worrying about the planet potentially killing us is less of a concern on Earth (unlike for Mars). Also, people going insane would be more of a concern on Mars than on Earth because on Mars you'd have to live on the bare minimum.

      Delete
    8. Tom, I would say that I disagreed with a lot of what you wrote. First, the main idea is to colonize Mars, so bringing a refrigerator and camera doesn't exactly help to do that. A refrigerator would be pointless if there is no food to even store in it. A camera would be nice to have, but taking pictures isn't exactly the necessity here. I would agree that bringing seeds would prove worthy since we need oxygen to survive, but other than that, I would disagree with your other two items. Also, you forgot to mention the rules you would like to see enforced and what would happen to violators of the laws.

      Delete
    9. Hey Tom, good thoughts but you would need electricity or some source of energy for the refrigerator to work. I like your ideas on seeds and cameras because my ideas were very similar. You need some sort of technology to keep track of information and document the findings. Seeds are a great source of the oxygen us humans all need to breathe.

      Delete
  6. If I could colonize in Mars, the three things I would bring are medicine, a radio, and an energy source. The three thing I chose will help me out tremendously and help make colonizing easier. First, I picked medicine because it would cure diseases and not kill people. If people were to all have a disease it would be impossible to start a colony because they would all die. I do not want to make the mistake Christopher Columbus did when he brought tons of diseases from the New World. Next, I would bring a radio to communicate with the people of Earth. A radio can help us talk to scientists and other experts about our life on the Red Planet. Lastly, I would bring an energy source that works like a solar panel to capture the Sun’s rays and produce energy for our everyday lives.
The person in charge of the colony must be a well-educated and know a lot about the Red Plant to help us survive. The person must also have a zero tolerance policy for people that break the rules. Also, the person must be open to ideas and thoughts from the people and have good character. The type of government I would want to set up on Mars is a democracy. A democracy can make sure that no group/person can be too powerful and the most important part is that people can have a say in government. A democracy would work very smoothly and efficiently to cultivate the colony.
The rules I would set forth are:
    1)RESPECT EVERYONE
    2)No killing or stealing
    3)No drugs/alcohol
    4)No violence(no weaponry allowed)

These are the basic rules to start a thriving colony and there would be a ZERO TOLERANCE policy on anyone who breaks them. People who break these laws would immediately be sent back to Earth and not be allowed back to Mars. The laws will greatly help the colony and to efficiently live with peace and comfort.

Also for the rules what would happen if someone were to vandalize the country would they get some type of penalty? Anyways good article

  7. First, it is a weird question. But if I could bring 3 things on Mars. I will probably bring medicine, something that can allow me to communicate with the Earth, and a Bible. The medicine can prevent me from emergency diseases. Although I have a lot of possibility to catch a new disease. But, I think medicine is still needed. Things that can allow us to communicate with the Earth is very important, because I can then tell the people on earth my situation and they can answer the question I have about the situation. (I doubt I need to bring it personally since when the technology is really developed, there is no need to worry about this.) At last, I think the Bible can be the nourishment of my mind. As long as I have faith and belief, I think I will not feel lonely and scared anymore.
I would really like to let a wise, knowledgable and influential person to become the first ruler. Because I think everything is hard in the beginning, if the ruler is wise enough to come up an idea every time when a problem reaches, and can also unite the people together. Then I think this " New Red World" will become prosperous. ( not sure for the future but currently.)
I would like to establish the following rules basically:
    1. No violence including killing, attacking and stealing... (I will make a law for this)
    2. Everyone has a right to speak out his or her opinions.
    3. No excuses for sin (should deserve the punishment)
These are just some basic rules I want to make, if anyone break the rules, then they will take all consequences of their own deeds.

    1. 1. Medicine is a great point I did not include in my blog-post. I should have though. It really is a necessity. 2. Earth-Communication is great, and cures home-sickness! 3. A Bible, faith gives us power. Now, I like how in your laws, you didn't just include the "bad-deeds" so-to-say-. You also included that "Everyone has the right to speak out his or her opinions". I feel this shows that the laws will be similar to how things are run here on Earth. -Tom Hindle

    2. Hi Gemmma I liked your blog it was similar to mine but at the same time different. You made an excellent point that I did not even think about and that is religion. Although everyone might not be Christian, bringing religion to comfort and soothe people was really good and I didn't think of that. Overall it was a very good blog.

    3. Including medicine as an item to bring to Mars was a smart idea, and it is something that would greatly benefit you, in case you got some sort of disease from this trip. I especially like how you said that you would bring the Bible...very clever. "At last, I think the Bible can be the nourishment of my mind." this sentence just stuck out to me, throughout your entire post. Not to mention, your rules were good, too.

    4. Gemma, I agree that this blog is very weird! However, I liked most of your choices. The Bible was one of the items you mentioned that I didn't quite agree on. This was mainly because it is not exactly something that would help colonize Mars, except to help people stay religious. Also, the Bible isn't used by many people around the world, like me for example, so it wouldn't exactly help everyone or the planet in this case. Other than that, I agree with your other choices. Medicine is definitely important to bring to prevent disease, and a communication device is good to have since Earth is very far and it helps to know current events. Your rules were very good, especially the one that does not allow any excuse for sin! You did a good job.

    5. I agree with you on all points. I do not mean to be so easy to agree but your points are true and very similar to mine. Something like the Bible or entertainment help us humans to stay sane because it helps to stay as calm and positive as possible. You really had to think outside of the box to think that something that seems like a want becomes a need in this specific situation. However, this is about colonizing Mars, so think about the other people, not everyone is religious. So, i partially disagree, it should just be some source of faith or entertainment fit for everyone.

  8. This is indeed a very weird topic but it is possible that we colonize mars one day. If I were to volunteer these are the three things I would bring, a type of suit that prevents all of us from burning alive, solar panels and a radio to communicate with the Earth. Since mars is a lot closer to the sun than us, it would be reasonable to take durable suits that can last us the duration of our trip. If we didn't have the suit we would surely boil and die. The second thing would be solar panels because in mars we would need a source of energy and since we are so close to the sun its the best option. Finally I would bring a radio that way we can communicate with the earth and tell them of our discoveries and if its okay to send more people or if there is an incident and we need to leave.
If there would be one ruler without a doubt it have to be lord Gehm. Hes a lord for a reason and out of the entire class has the most knowledge and leadership qualities. The type of government would have to be democracy that way every one is consulted before something happens and everyone is aware of it. Also it allows people to voice their ideas and it could be beneficial to the voyage/colonization of the planet. The rules are :
Be respectful to others as well as the new planet
If you find something you are unsure of consult leader before touching or poking
Everyone should follow the duties given out by the leader
And finally if you are not feeling well or desperately need to go home tell leader or other official before any actions are taken.
A punishment varies with each broken rule, you vandalize a part of the new planet you will be kicked off without warning. If you find something and touch it the punishment will not be so severe. It basically depends on how badly you break the rule and if you are asking for trouble. These are the three items I would bring, the leader, the rules, and the punishment for breaking them.

    1. Elijah, I said the exact thing about who should be leader. Lord Gehm is the best choice as a leader because of his ability to understand people and his ability to be strict when times call for it. I guess what they say is true great minds think alike.

  9. Whilst preparing for the trip to the Red Planet, I would bring a type of farm animal (preferably a chicken, cow, or pig), form of communication that stands sustainable in the planet, and a "tool-kit" of some sort containing small necessities such as weapons, medicine, etc. The animal would help in the environment because it could fulfill more than one need. Growth of animal population, forms of food, and even cross-breeding with different species are some of the examples. It would be more obtainable to have an animal that is a herbivore so it doesn't decrease the population of animals and could feed off the cultivation of the planet. Communication, to me is a key factor. It could lead to gathering a population that eventually prospers and a progressing environment. Communication is beneficial in terms of releasing actions being performed in Mars and reaching others for help or to converse about the developments. A "tool-kit" would be a great initial standard. The smallest of objects could stand great importance. Weapons would only be used for protection. Medicine would prevent any diseases from occurring and maintain a healthy populace.
If someone were to be put in charge, i would choose an expertise in the scientific field for the most reasonable leadership. They would have to pertain to the main attributes of controlling efficiently, survival ethics, and generosity towards the people yet still military minded. With all these traits, they would additionally have to be knowledgable. A person fit for these characteristics would be perfect in keeping the environment intact. The government I would choose is Democracy because it is vital for the populace to have say in what goes and equal treatment.
Rules are necessary from keeping the society away from chaos. Some rules I would assist would be:
1.) Violence or improper use of weapons is not permitted and highly intolerable. It is fine for arguments to arise but should be settled in a mature manner.
2.) Respect each other. This links with the mature behavior and helps a society prosper with good actions.
3.) It is permitted to attend school until the age of 25 and pass all grades. Education is highly important.
4.) No smoking or harm to the environment.
5.) Populace should be participatory with the environment activities and are encouraged to add input of their thoughts.
People who choose to disobey the rules their first time will be excused but on probation. I believe this is acceptable to an extent because everyone deserves second chances. If they haven't learned their lesson, they would be exiled. Enforcing the rules is important because it makes the society suitable for all.

    1. Shivani, I like the ideas about the items you would bring to Mars- especially about communication. To me, it is very important to keep in touch with others and let people know about the steps we took to colonizing mars. Plus, the rules that you would want to establish were actually very good ones that would be beneficial to all of us.

    2. Shivani, like Paige said, I like the items you chose to bring along. I mostly liked your decision on the tool kit and the animal. I would have never thought about a tool kit with weapons and medicine. Those can really ensure the health of the inhabitants of Mars. The rules you chose were also really great, like doing participatory activities to help ideas to form. That was clever. Your reasons behind your decision on the items were strong.

  11. Colonizing Mars would definitely be a very interesting (but very difficult) thing to do. First off, I'd only be able to take three items with me, due to the strict weight limitations. The first item that I would bring is a biology book. This might sound strange, but it could turn out to be very useful in the long run. With the book, I would be able to learn a lot more information about Mars. Overall, this could help me compare life on Earth to life on Mars (which would also help the scientists). The second item that I would bring with me is seeds. Yes, there is almost no oxygen on Mars, but with the discovery of water, we could try planting these seeds and someday find out how/if we can produce food on this planet to help sustain life. The third thing that I would take with me to Mars is a device that could let me contact my friends and family back home. This is simply because we would be so far away from home, and for a very long time.
Having someone be in charge of the group would have to be someone who is a good leader, can find solutions to certain situations, and is completely willing to do so.
As for the government, I feel that (if we are ever able to sustain life on mars) we should be able to have a democracy, where everyone has a voice. Some of our basic rules would be-
    1. No killing/violence that can put others at risk.
    2. No stealing
    3. Respect everyone and treat them in ways you would want to be treated
If there happens to be anyone that does not follow these rules, there will be legal action taken against them.

    1. Aha! I love the seeds Idea! I included in my own post as well! But, I honestly think it would work, and it is DEFINITELY worth the effort. The Biology Book intrigued me though. I thought "Why Biology?" But, when I think about it, would the Biology book pertain to Mars? Or Earth? Would the book be useful? Otherwise, I feel the post meets the standards of a civilized community, and survival. -Tom Hindle

    2. Paige, we had extremely similar viewpoints based on the items to bring, rules of the planet and the type of government. I agree with most of your opinions. I like how you suggested bringing a biology book, specifically. I thought of more generalized books such as books based on agriculture and types of government. Good job.

    3. We have very similar points on this subject. I too said that everyone should respect everyone. but a pointer that if you were to grow plants, what would you use as soil? Mars is basically dust so if you were to bring seeds, you should bring some type of soil as well that is suitable for the seeds you brought.

      Delete
  12. If I were to carry only 3 things with me on my blast off to Mars, they would include seeds of various plants, soil and books. It took me quite some time and rational thinking to arrive at only 3 things out of the entire planet Earth to take with me to Mars. One basic necessity that is vital for human beings to survive is oxygen. Without oxygen, we are unable to breathe. Therefore, bringing seeds and soil to this unfamiliar planet will allow oxygen to be released into the atmosphere. If there is already water and sunlight, bringing seeds and soil would result in plants to flourish after being implanted. As more and more plants are grown and the planet becomes more cultivated, farming would be able to develop. This would result in food for the inhabitants of Mars. This would, of course, be a long-term process which requires patience. The last item that I would bring on planet Mars would be books. Books would be one of the most accommodating items to have to expand upon knowledge dealing with agriculture, types of government and education systems. Knowledge is a key component when it comes to this situation, considering the fact that an unaccustomed planet is being transformed into a habitable environment. The planet is starting off from scratch. As a result, further knowledge, such as those in books is compulsory. In order for such a planet to thrive, a successful leader is required. I would look for the qualities of this leader to consist of a vast knowledge in areas of science. This is because a leader that is familiar with how to cope with environmental issues and the tolerance of the human body on Mars would allow the planet to prosper. I would also look for a leader that knows how to take charge, be organized and respect the people’s opinions. The type of government that I would put into place would definitely be a democratic government. I believe the people should have the power to be able to determine what is best for their planet. People should be allowed to say what they feel and give their input on the development of the planet. Additionally, a set of rules is needed to have a controlled and organized environment. Some of the rules of planet Mars would include:
    1. No violence amongst inhabitants.
    2. People must be involved in contributing to the expansion of the planet.
    3. Respect is required. Without it, the planet would be chaos and communication between the people would not be seen.
Anyone who decides to go against the rules would be penalized with severe consequences. Each individual starts off with 0 strikes. If they commit a crime in violation of the rules, they will receive 1 strike and be charged with a sentence of 2 months in prison, no matter how severe the crime. If they commit a second crime against the rules, they are permanently evacuated from Mars and back to Earth. Even though in this comes off as a bit too harsh, it is necessary to take these actions. If not, people would commit the same crimes repeatedly.

  14. Note: My three things were selected behind the assumption that we would already have the bare essentials such as clothing.
The three things that I would carry on my journey would be the following. A comlink that would allow me to communicate with those on earth and see what was happening (sort of like an ipad that would work on Mars), solar panels that would power devices/electronics, and lastly a portable backup generator that could power electronics for a few hours if the solar panels stopped functioning. I would create a type of government in which a council would be in charge so a group of people, (not a single person) would have authority. They would create and uphold the law. However, I would set up an emergency chancellor that the citizens of Mars could vote to make head of their proceedings if the council was deemed unfit or if there was a time of crisis. Some of the core rules I would include would be no homicide, no vandalism, and all tools and weapons are to be held at an undisclosed location to the general public. Lastly, any requests to leave Mars must be recommended by the council or the emergency chancellor in order to be approved and everyone must contribute to sustaining the environment that we’ve set up. All of these rules would be mandatory except for the last which would be optional, however that specific citizen excepted it, then that person would receive better living accommodations. Some penalties for disobeying the laws would include temporary or permanent house arrest , deportation back to Earth, and confinement within a prison until deportation.

    1. If we were to travel to Mars and attempt to begin civilization, I would bring 3 items that are significant and necessary in doing so. There are so many things I would love to bring along; however, the three items I would bring would be a plant that produces seeds, a pregnant female cow, and a solar panel. First, I would bring a plant because it would help release oxygen into the atmosphere. There is always a risk of the plant dying but that it what the seeds are for, to create new plants in order to keep up the oxygen supply. Oxygen would be a very important factor if we were to survive, let alone colonize the planet! Second, I would bring a cow because it can be used for various reasons. A cow can produce food for all human beings and also be able to reproduce more cows. It can produce milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, and even meat after there is an abundance of cows. Also, the cow ties in with the plant because after more plants are produced, the cow can eat plants for energy and survival. The cows can use the oxygen given off by the plants and the plants can use the carbon dioxide given off by the cows. Lastly, I would bring solar panels because they can help to generate power and electricity that could be used for making and providing numerous things; like light, heat, technology, and devices for communication. To keep things in order, we should definitely elect a leader. I would want a ruler with leadership abilities, vast knowledge about the planet and its environment, the human body and what we need to survive in that atmosphere. The leader should be kind, respectful, and able to fulfill the wishes of the inhabitants. It should be someone that is a scientist, as well as a political figure: such as Al Gore! I believe Al Gore would be a great leader for planet Mars. Furthermore, in order to keep the planet and its population in check, rules are definitely necessary. These are some rules I think should be enforced:
      1) Respect is key. This will allow citizens to be able to communicate better with one another.
      2) Helping the environment and colonization of Mars at least once a week. This ensures that citizens become more involved.
      3) No drugs or smoking is allowed. This ensures the health of many citizens.
      4) Violence is intolerable. Violence creates disagreements and disrespect. Disrespect is against the law.
      5) Crime is illegal. (Stealing, murdering, hurting, kidnapping, etc)
      6) Everyone has a right to their own opinion but as long as they are respectful about it.
If anyone were to disobey the rules, there would be necessary actions taken to see to the consequences. One violation of the law puts an individual on probation based on the damage/harm. Two violations lead to community work and house arrest, also based upon the violation. Three violations lead to jail time for the appropriate amount of time. Basically, it depends on the severity of the violation.

    2. I liked you ideas about the nonnegotiable rules. I too said should be respective of others. But you brought up good points that i had not thought of, which i should have. One being freedom of speech and expression and two prohibiting the act of smoking. I agree with almost everything you said in your post.

  15. If I were to go to mars, and I could only take three things, I would bring things that I could not love without. First of all, I would need a spacesuit, so I could I actually breathe, this would come along with extra oxygen as well. Second, I would bring canned food so that my food source would last a long time. And finally I would bring a weapon incase I get attacked by unknown beings.
For the government, I would make Mr gehm the leader or president. He would be the president of the democratic government that would be set. Mr gehm seems like a good leader because he is fair and funny but strict at the same. Democracy would be the way to go because the people can get a say.
    The non-negotiable rules would be
    1. Respect others
    2. Respect the enviornment
3.share what you have, because resources are limited
    4. No wasting of resources or goods because resources are very limited dice we are on mars.
Now if someone disobeys these rules, the consequences could be severe or not so severe depending on their account. So in conclusion, moving to Maes would be a hassle but with right kind of people and government, it could theoretically work.

  16. If I chose to volunteer to colonize Mars there would be three vital things to bring on the trip that I would elect to bring. These items would have a low enough weight to be able to cram into a small area, and in turn, be able to leave earth easily. One of the three things would be different technologies like digital science, digital textbooks, and the smallest item I could take that holds the most gigabytes of information. Some technology would be used to further investigate the planet, and some would be to follow the scientist’s rules and commands for each specific person each day. I would also have to bring the arts. The arts consists of books, movies, and so forth. I think the arts would play a humongous role in whether the colonization of mars is successful. Books, movies, and other forms of entertainment keeps you amused, pleased, and overall entertained. People will be very bored and distraction is a wonderful thing. Providing your fellow friends joining you on the trip to Mars with entertainment can aid in helping people to not go crazy, and also stay cool, calm, and collected. The third and final thing I would choose is seeds of many plants. This is very efficient because you can basically fit tons of plants into a tiny space with a total sum weight that is low. This provides you with a possibly great amount of oxygen produced due to photosynthesis, if the plant can obtain nutrients in some sort of way on the planet Mars. The person that will definitely be in charge on my mission to Mars is a highly-intelligent scientist, that is also a good worker with modern technology. This scientist must prove to me that they know how to lead this type of mission/adventure well and in an organized, and has time managed properly. Also, this scientist cannot be socially awkward. In other words, he/she cannot be shy or a bad public speaker. This leader really has to be well-rounded to fit my standards. The type of government that I would put into place would be a democracy because everyone has the right to speak and tell the others how they feel about certain ideas or whatever crosses their mind because we would need all the help we can get. Some rules that would be enforced on all of the people going through with this journey are:
    1. No disrespect towards the head scientist.
    2. Any form of physical violence is not tolerated.
    3. Mental abuse is not tolerated.
    4. Work and specific jobs must be done by everyone, every day, and at certain time periods. Jobs will be assigned to every person.
    5. If any person is questioned or confused at something, consult the head scientist
-If confusion causes chaos, for example if someone pulls something foreign out of the ground and it causes an explosion, injuring many people, there will be major consequences that will be discussed later.
    6. Everyone must maintain a healthy diet and healthy lifestyle.
    7. Everyone stick together and no messing around.
    8. Good work and successful days will result in benefits like promotions to higher positions, better reputations, and other “secret” benefits that will be explained to the successful and well-behaved people.
    9. Any violation in rules 1-7 will result in that person being forced to give the head scientist a 2-hour massage. Also, this individual may be forced out of the group of people on the mission and could end up doing terribly vigorous work 6 days a week.
